Steve Foss
If you have smelt, you don't need cicsoes. There haven't been any ciscoes sampled by the DNR on Burntside for over 20 years, not since the smelt found the lake 50 years ago.The smelt, as well as eating the eggs of a lot of other fish species (ciscoes, whitefish, walleye, laker), compete for the same micro-organisms as all the other gamefish fry, and that one-two punch is what has depressed natural reproduction (some would say eliminated natural reproduction) and forced the DNR to stock walleye and laker there.I wish the local bait stores would go heavier on smelt and lighter on ciscoes, but I've got someone bringing me up smelt for the Bash. Lisa Almquist
Smelt's the way to go then. Sometimes even I need to be corrected! Between all of us I don't think we'll have a shortage anyway!
