It ain't summer yet!

Hmmm, seems like the number of new posts on the general ice fishing boards has dropped off since the Minnesota walleye/northern season closed.

You folks all eyeing your Lunds and wishing for May already? grin.gif

Almost! Boat is in the garage, half ripped apart. I dont think I'm going to be ready by freeze your butt tourney time tho. New 24 volt autopilot, new 24 volt 74 lb vantage minnkota, new x 97 lowrance, new batteries. Time consuming! 80 days till opener roughly? Hopefully we can get a reasonably early ice out so we got some crappie chasing in before the walleye grind starts up. Last summer went waayyyy too fast.. Paul

I'm actually looking to April grin.gif I hope to have the boat out by Easter, or as soon as the ice clears off the lakes... That's my goal atleast.. whether it will happen or not... I was half tempted to drive to WI where my boat was stored Thursday and just sit in it for a couple hours... It's getting bad...

even you have to admit that it gets old staring down a 7" hole. We have way too much ice up here in Bemidji right now, my hand auger is barely reaching through to the bottom on some lakes! I just need to cast before i go crazy! I was casting down the halls of my dorm today.....again. I got a lot of weird looks. If only people could understand....on the plus side the cabelas spring catalog came in the mail today.....goodbye money...hello new lures

Hey Bobb-O,
Don't forget to stop by the Pure Fishing Outlet store in Spirit Lake IA. Awesome deals if your looking for rods, reels and line. Last year I picked up 4 Abu Garcia C4's for $30 each and some Fenwick Techna AV's for $19 each. Their stock is always changing so you'll never know what to find there, all reconditioned, but just like new.
Good Luck

My folks live in Springfield MO, and they have 8 inches of snow today. I have visited Bass Pro several times it's great! Make sure you visit the outlet store next door for some great deals! Also don't waist your money at the National wildlife museum it's a total rip-off.

Do they have ice on the lakes in Kansas, and if they do would it be out by March 10-15? I am looking to get some fishing in while I am down there.....go figure.....

Bobb-o, the lakes in KS don't get much ice, mostly just skimmed over. I was just down there last weekend and it hit 57 degrees. Stopped by the new Cabela's, too. It is amazing. Absolutely dwarfs the one in Owatonna. Of course, so does the parking lot, so make sure you have your walking shoes on! LOL!! Also, you will not believe the size of the two largest catfish in their tanks. ENORMOUS!!!!!!!!

Bobb-o - I know the feeling. I allways go fishing for "grass" carp and "snow" bass in my front yard wink.gif I was out there the other day breaking in a Abu Cardnial 4 bearing that I got at clearnce sale 25% off for $30. And yes... once in awhile I get an odd look.. or snag a oncoming car antenna.. I lost a few yellow casting plugs that way... that and the tree in front which must have 2 dozen in it... I have to say it's a nice reel, and I'm looking for a nice bass rod to go with it, not all those flimsly IM6 Medium-Light walleye rods I see around everywhere... I was thinking of an ugly stick.. anyone ever had any luck with them? I'm looking to spend $25-50 on a decent rod to replace a "bargin bin" one that got sat on last year. That was however only the 2nd $10 rod I broke; they sometimes have good rods in those bins if you look hard enough..

crawler, you want a good rod at a good price go take a look at the rapala sportsman series rods. They run aboot $25 at Fleet Farm and come with a one year warranty. Accidentally broke mine when the trunk of the car came down on it, brought it back to Fleet Farm and they told me to just go pick out another one. In my experience the ugly sticks are nice rods, but dont have a lot of backbone, I use the one i currently have for northern pike.

I caught a passing cars' radio antennea once with a backcast while flyfishing a roadside lake. You shoulda heard my drag sing before I realized what was going on! I then pointed my rod at the car and grabbed my reel to snap the leader, otherwise that "CAR-p" woulda spooled me! smile.gif

I hoped I wasn't the only one who did the yard fishing thing. Yup, the neighbors think I'm nuts. When the new equipment starts coming in its hard to leave it alone. I didn't need anymore rods or reels this year. But I keep unpacking and repacking my new locator. I can't wait to play with that.

The best is using a dead-stick with a piece of bread for squirrels and birds. They grab it and you jerk it away from them, they get so confused. I had a squirrel follow the bread almost up to me once. He just couldnt figure out what was going on.

That's a good one Cyberfish! I do a lot of flippin' for "cats" in the living room. Try a piece of string or a mouse around table legs & chairs. Also, the inside turn between the T.V. & the couch is always a good spot. Vern

heh. I've also caught a "CAR-p" before.. when I was fishing for "snow bass" a few years ago. I have no choice but to cast in the street, unless I want to walk to the park, which is harder to do in the winter time. Our street is very dead and slow usually... but I did manage to get the plug wound around an oncoming car's antenna once. Its a good thing I use mono and not superlines.. or the rod would have gone along with it... Of course.. it would be more funny in your case when you weren't really expecting it grin.gif

ANd yes.. I go "cat-fishing" too. I have an old rod that I spooled up with some old soft braid line I had laying around. Kite string works too... but it takes a lot less for the cat to chew through it. NEVER use mono-- espically if your cat isn't declawed. When my cat was a kitten, I was respooling a reel when he pounced on the spool lying on the ground with his claws extended. He retracted them and got the mono stuck around his claws. It took us awhile to convince him to extend his claws again so we could untangle the monofilament line around them. Also most cats still keep their back claws, and they could get mono line stuck there as well. I do a lot less cat-fishing now that he's... less mobile (he needs a diet pretty bad..)
