Amsoil Sabre and Magnum III Auger

Bryon

Question

I just picked up some Amsoil Sabre (small engine) oil and I have a Magnum III auger about 20 years old. Actually, I have 2, other one is only about 15 years old.

What I'm wondering is if I can run 100:1 mix in them or go a little less - 80:1 or 50:1

Any advice?

I run amsoil sabre in my old jiffy...probably about 15 years old or more and have no problems, in fact I noticed that it ran better than ever when i switched. if you bought the small packet to mix in 1 gal of gas, that actually makes it about 80-1 or so. otherwise, I don't think there's anything wrong with mixing a little more if you're nervous, but I can tell you first hand it works great at 100-1

Start with a 80:1 mix for the first few tanks and then after that you should be able to go to 100:1 with no worries. They say you can do 100:1 right off the bat, but with engine that age that has been on mix it's whole life, it would be better to mix it a little stronger until all the old oil is burned out. You will notice that it will run better and pick up a few RPM once you get it switched over and the oil is burned out. grin.gif

I find it very interesting that Jiffy is selling a synthetic oil that is "approved" to be mixed with one gallon of premium gasoline. The mix? 40:1 (If I remember right.) Before, Jiffy sold the same type of oil as Strikemaster still does....the 24:1, smokeless oil mixture. Since both Jiffy and Srikemaster use the same motor in their 2 and 3 h.p. models, this must mean that this oil is officially endorsed and approved by the same engine manufacturer? Maybe Jiffy found that the motors do indeed run better and cleaner with the new oil and leaner oil mixture?

I just switched my 5 year old strikemaster over to sabre, i mixed the first gallon at 80:1 and i have 2 tanks through it and it is running better then it ever did, i think i will swith to 100:1 with the next gallon. I was a little nervous at first with the 80:1 mix but it seems to be good so far.

Thanks guys, just wasn't sure how much to use right away, I was even thinking just to be on the safe side, going with 50:1

Running the Amsoil Sabre a 50:1 sure isn't going to hurt anything and I think you'll still see the benefits of a leaner gas/oil mix and synthetic oil.

Everytime I run my Strikemaster, I'm reminded that factory premix ratio is 24:1 as its printed on top of the recoil. At 50:1, you are still cutting your oil amount in half.

I switched from the Strikemaster "smokeless" in the little bottles to 1 year of using Klotz synthetic and now 2 years of using Amsoil Sabre synthetic in my Strikemaster.

I typically experience 2-3 pull starts, a "bit" of smoke at startup and then it runs virtually smoke free, no oil residue dripping from muffler, and a very smooth running auger.

Here's a question for anyone running a 80:1 or 100:1 mix, no matter what brand. Has anyone noticed that their auger is not going in for a carb cleaning since switching? I try and push as many people as I can to go for these products, based on availablity in their area. When they do, I don't see them again and I think that is honestly a good thing. I have been running the Stens version for years and have some friends that have run the Opti 2 mix for a long time and have not had to do a tune up. I run it in my chainsaw, weed eater, leaf blower, and my auger. I had a chainsaw that was 12 years old that had been on Stens from day one until I decided to drop a tree on it. Saw got smashed frown.gif but when I took it apart the rest of the way the condition of the internal parts was amazing. Especially for the amount of wood it had cut. I would bet this would be true whether it was Amsoil or Opti as well. These synthetic mixes are the best thing to hit 2 strokes IMO.

You can safely use the Saber Professional at the lean mix ratios in any air-cooled 2-stroke engine up to about 50 years old (back to made about 1960). Older than that you will have to use it considerably richer.

Many prefer to use it richer than the 100-1 with a lot using it at 80-1, and some even using it 50-1. Even at 50-1 it still runs nearly smokeless in most machines.
