riding in SD

I was also curious about riding in SD so I did a google search for atv's in South Dakota. It yielded a link to a sight where a guy posted some pics with a couple descriptions of the areas he went.

It sounds as though the Black Hills are completely open to ATV's as long as there is an existing trail to travel on.

My wife isn't into ATV's nor is my youngest son. My oldest son will be busy working to earn some funds prior to going off to college next fall, so that leaves me to myself.

The next best place I would love to go riding would be Colorado, but it's twice the drive to get there than the Black Hills. Even more if a person wants to go to Silverton CO.

Sounds like I have some planning to do laugh.gif

The wife and I went out there last year on vacation. We didn't bring the wheelers since our main focus was to just sightsee, relax, camp and goof off. We were driving to Deadwood and saw an ATV rental place so I swung in. I wanted to get some first hand info on where riding was ok in case I were to come back. As the lady working there was describing the area I started thinking "man I wish I had our wheelers with us now". I think she recognized "the look" on my face. It was a weekday (early June} and things must have been slow, so she said I'll make you a deal. Go ahead and take a couple ATVs out, ride this trail, (showing us on a map) and if you are not having a good time, bring them back in a half hour and I'll only charge you 20 bucks. Sounded fair to me so we took off with a couple of Hondas into the woods. Minutes into the ride I was amazed at the beauty and abundance of trails. Luckily I had brought my GPS with because we rode trail after trail and got further and further away. Even with that it was 3 and a half hours later when we returned. There were so many trail choices and intersections in some places I'm not sure I would have remembered the way out without the GPS. There is a great deal of diversity in the trails ands quite a few hills although there wasn't anything overly challenging involved. My wife likes to ride and has now suggested going back with our own equipment. After checking the area there are several options for lodging including camping cabins very nears trails that would allow for hitting the trails directly rather than trailering. I'd say go for it!

I won't be going back without my wheelers. wink.gif

2009 all riding is going to be locked down to specific trails, as it stands right now you can ride anywhere in the black hills national forest,,,except for burn areas ie...jasper.

I go out there with buddies 3 times a year and never have a problem finding places to ride.

Just go out there unload them and ride them everywhere, keep the truck parked at the cabin.

Keep them out of custer state park, they cannot be in there. And if you come across a burn area, get out quickly or you will pay $$$.

there are maps of the area out there that you can get from a forest ranger and they will help you out also.

have fun and tread lightly!!
