opening links in a e-mail

anyone know why i can't put my cursor over a link in some of my e-mails and open it that way? when i do it freezes everything up and i have to do the control,alt, delete thing.

Hard to say.

Could be security settings although you generally get a security alert message.

My guess is something along the lines of bad/corrupt file association.

Look at the options you have in the "HELP" menu bar at the top of the program screen. Some programs have a "Repair" option. You could try that...

If your PC is locking up when you do this, it might be time to empty out your temp and temp internet files.

Good idea to do a disk clean-up and a defrag every few months, sooner if you use the PC a lot.

There is a cool little cleaner utility out there called CCleaner. Goes through and cleans up a bunch of temp type files and more all at once for you. I have used it for a couple years.

I got mad at it yesterday and shut it down hard and when it rebooted everything seems to work fine. Go figure. I will look into the ccleaner though. Thanks everyone for the help.

Upnorth...if I run that and it clears all my cookies do I have to re put all my passwords in for everything or is there a way around that?

Your saved passwords are usually stored in a password cache. I am pretty confident that your passwords are not stored in cookies.

I also use CCcleaner and it will have some box's you will check off. You might want to uncheck your cookies on the list of items it will clean up.

Some passwords are stored in a different area.

However, I think passwords for websites where you have put in your userID and password then checked the "remember me" box will be lost in most cases when you clear cookies.

These links explains stored passwords the way I understand them to be stored. That is not to say some sites don't store them differently like in cookies. I just have not seen it that way personally.

All I know is that after I run CCleaner, most websites don't recognize me and i have to re-enter my userID and password to post.

Haven't seen any specific setting in CCleaner to exclude the passwords cache, but I could have missed it.

Even if I use the clear cookies option directly in IE7, most websites seem to require that I re-enter userIH and password.

Interesting. Might be worth switching to FireFox which has a separate password manager.

Firefox will do the same thing when using dump cleaner however when you go to the site you are no longer able to get in and go to the log in page firefox will give you the default name and password you need for that site. It will fill in the blanks and alls you have to do is click on the stay logged in box and click on log in. Ccleaner and firefox are awsome programs. Fire fox probably loads sites at least three times faster then IE.

Yeah, to be more clear, the userID is cleared and so is the password from the login page (no cookie, no recognition upon return). But, as eurolarva said, the browser may pull up the password (from the password cache) once you put your userID back in the web page login IF you told the browser to remember the password.

I used Firefox all the time in the past, but I just got sorta tired of it not working with the content of some websites. So, now I pretty much use IE7 all the time. Usually it works pretty fast, but with some of the security stuff like HSOforum phishing check, certain sites do take a few seconds to open. The speed seems to get better once you've been to the site once or twice.

I tried IE7 for a couple weeks and it was so clunky I went back to IE6 for the times I need to use IE and use either FireFox or Opera for everything else. IE7 is about as much a pain in the you know what to use as Vista I am the first to realize that there is more security needed for PCs now days, but there has be a better approach than what Microsoft is dishing out these days.

The best security feature made yet for internet browsing is to really think about what you are doing out there and using some common sense.

I personally save very few passwords on a PC/laptop, at least nothing that I really am concerned about being secure. Forums like this are no big deal,(at least to me) but anything like your financial accounts etc, I wouldn't save a password, especially on a laptop that can be stolen. Someone gets a hold of your device and all the info stored in you profile(XP, 2000, and probably Vista) is there for the picking. If remembering passwords are pain, pick one or 2 strong passwords(8 characters and using upper case, lower case, numbers and special characters) that you can easily remember and change all of your accounts to the the one password.

Call me paranoid, but I work in the computer industry and some of the things people do scare me, even people in my own dept scare me. I setup a central managed Wireless network where I work and some my co-worker complained about how hard it is for them to get on the network, I just said good, if it is hard for you with instructions then it won't be easy for someone without the setup parameters to hack.

One last thing and I will get off my pulpit. Just remember easy usually means less secure.

No problems with bad stuff here. I haven't had a malware or hacker problem for years on any of my own computers.

All the clean-up I do for friends and family is a whole different story.

It's so bad with some of them that I don't even offer to fix/clean anymore because they just don't get it...

Stay off the porn sites, don't click the "free", "you've just won", "your PC needs repair" popup boxes, and don't open questionable email. About 99% of one's computer problems disappear with a few really easy rules/precautions.

Dunno... I did the customer beta thing with Vista and haven't bit on it at retail. But, my experience with IE7 seems quite different than yours.

Maybe it's the computer... on this box, Win XP and IE7 were all done from a clean install. Heck, I'd probably still be using Win2k, except I'm finding less and less of the free stuff is working on the older platforms.

I installed Firefox and kinda like it. Now...how do you keep IE from loading when you reboot? I would like Firefox to be the browser thats comes up.

With firefox browser open click tools, options then main. Bottom box is system defaults. You should be able to set it up from there

It wasn't the fact that it was slow, it was how it worked and how you use it. Where things that you open in FireFox opens in a new tab, IE7 still opens it in a new window, and just the way it all works is just not efficient for me.

Just wait until you demo office 2007, you will feel like you are on a MAC, not that MACs are bad, just a totally look and feel from even Office 2003.

If you want to set FireFox to the default browser:

Go to tool - options - and on the main page at the bottom put a check in the box asking for whether to check for default browser at startup. You can even do the check now and it will set it for you.
