I just purchased the 32" sweetheart at the ice show today upon the recomendation of Cory and i am just wondering what type of reel you all think i should pair it up with. I mainly got this rod for hole hopping but will use it in my Fish Trap Scout some too. Thanks in advance!

My favorite ice reel for panfish is a Tica. I have the cheepest UL model and the thing is sweeet! Great drag system and have had no problems with being stiff with the factory grease. The high end tica's feel like the cats meow when I have played with them in the store but have not found a reason to get the expensive models when the $29 tica preformed so well!

yeah i bought a 28' Perch sweetheart this fall and plan on putting another Tica on it. Also I used my first Tica all summer on an ultralight rod and it was an awesome combo on the full size rod too. You wont regret getting one because they can be used all summer for UL panfishing too. Well worth the money compared to a $10 reel IMO

Dude! We should have hooked you up while you were there. grin.gif I'll give a nod to the Tica's as well. Another good reel for the money is the Abu Garcial 100U and 300U. Check for a mail in rebate form and you can save some more money as well.

Good luck,

Sorry to say but Stone Legacy was bought out. The store might still have a few around but you'll have to call Matt to see if they have one. I'm glad I got one late last year! Thorne is also expecting their new bags to arrive sometime soon. I don't know what they look like but I've heard that they are a lot like the Ready Rig. There are also a few other choices out there so try and find the one that suits your needs.

I have that JR's bag and it works fine. It is pretty old and has held up great. The one thing I have had happen is hooks like to get caught in the lining. Trebbles are usually the bad ones but this is easily solved by using those little Tackle Pouches from Today's Tackle. They come 3 to a bag for 2 dollars so they are definately worth the money.

Good luck,

I have LF500's on both my walleye and perch sweethearts. They are nice little reels at a relatively cheap price. I actually picked up two more of these same reels yesterday at $25 a piece to team up with the two new Thorne Bros rods that I plan on picking up this coming weekend. wink.gif

I would suggest the Tica Cetus LF500, SB500, or SS500 depending on how much you want to spend. They are all very similar with the SB500 getting the nod from me for value.

I would also suggest Abu Garcia's Cardinal 100U or 300U like Corey mentioned. The Cardinal 100U is a nice little reel for $29.99.

All of the above reels will balance well with that rod.

For that fine high dollar Thorne Rod I would recommend the Shimano Sedona 750, Sahara 750 or Symetre 750. Ticas are great little reels (I have Several) but hands down the best small reels IMO are the Shimanos.

In regards to Shimano, nothing wrong with the reels at all, but the 750 size is a bit larger reel than Tica Cetus & the Cardinals. In my opinion, I prefer the smaller size of the Ticas over the Shimanos. Maybe a bit nit picky but the reels are different sizes.

Yeah your right the Shimanos are a tad larger. Comes down to personal preference. The 32" is a decent sized rod and I think the shimano would be a good fit.

Yeah, you do have a good point which got me thinking (which is always dangerous). grin.gif

I would probably go with a Tica or Abu on the 28" & 32" Panfish & Perch Sweethearts. The 4" of extra length on these rods is negligible. I would more than likely go with a Shimano on a Walleye Sweetheart, which also have the slightly longer Tennessee handle on them.

Like you said, personal preference for sure. I'm becoming more an Abu-Garcia guy and am in the process of switching up a few of my Tica equipped rods to Abu Cardinals this winter.

thats interesting hanson i like the ticas but what makes you like the abu garcias better? just curious...

I have Abu's on all of my summer rods- (3) Ambassadeur 6500C3, (3) Ambassadeur 7000C3, (1) Ambassadeur 5500LC (line counter), and a couple Cardinal 502 on my jigging rods. The line counter is on my crank trolling rod and the 6500 & 7000 are on all my catfishing rods. I'll be buying some more next summer as well.

Checking out my ice rods, I've got 8 Tica Cetus (6 SB500 & 2 SS500) along with 2 old Shimano Spirex 500 reels.

I've got more rods on the way and need more reels. grin.gif I really, really love my larger Cardinal open water reels and want to give them (smaller size) a chance on the ice this winter.

Nothing wrong with my Ticas or I wouldn't have that many. I really loved those old Shimano Spirex but they don't have instant anti-reverse on them either. Bummer. frown.gif

IMO... we have a market full of great reels that work great on ice fishing rods. I don't think you can go wrong with a smaller reel from a reputable manufacturer - Abu, Shimano, Mitchell, Pflueger, Tica, Okuma, etc, etc. If you asked me this question 5 years ago, the field would have been much, much smaller.

I have both Tica's and Cardinals on my rods IMO the Cardinal 300U is every bit as nice of a reel as any Cetus for a very comparable price. I have been using the Cardinals for two seasons I think with no trouble what so ever before that I was generally using store brand Diawa's that have also been very good to me.

yea now you have me thinking whether i should go with a cardinal or a tica i am going to check out the weight and probably get the lighter one since they are both obviously very nice reels. I have never had a thorne bros rod or anything close to it in fact so i want to make sure i get the best reel possible on it for the money. I have mostly used genz stix and some cajun ice combos...

I love the Ticas as well. However, I picked up a Mitchell Avocet II Gold Series 1000UL and I think I'm gonna love it. The 500UL would probably be better for the panfishsweetheart though as is a bit light at 6.9 oz. The drag and reel are very smooth and the size and price is right.

Several good options out there for these rods.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
