Cyberfish
Hey, don't insult the magnificient Burbot by callin it a Lawyer! Burbot, Ling cod, Eelpout, Lota Lota, whatever you call it, you discovered something ! they are the best eatin' fish there is! (Gem eye Guy, are you here? Testify!) It is very much illegal to throw burbot on the ice and leave them there. If you see someone doing it, tell them how good they are to eat, If they don't believe you, then toss it in your bucket, and Bon Appetit! Fish Oooon! ><}}}("< ---><!> [This message has been edited by Cyberfish (edited 01-04-2003).]
hunt4food
I am a believer!!! I tried Burbot for my first time while at Lake Of The Woods 3 years ago. I really like eating them now. Boiled in lemon water with a little melted butter and salt MMMMMMM. I guess that's why they call it poor mans lobster!! I will say one thing though. There is not much meat on them. It is hardly worth keeping one under 7 pounds to eat.
knoppers
I know one person that actually ate a pout, and he became very sick.funniest thing, we were up at clearwater lake on the gunflint trail fishin' for lakers, and we were right at the border for motorized area, we caught a pout, thru it on the ice, and this person came up to us and said, do you want that lawyer.since we never heard pout called lawyers, we all kind of looked at each other, thinking, oh oh what did we do that we would need a lawyer. after some stupid lookin' back and forth, the guy says, I mean your pout, do ya what him.its funny how you hear of some things. upnorth
We used to fish for them in the spring in at canal park in Duluth. Fished underneath the lift bridge with smelt off on the bottom. You get the fresh fish just coming in from Lake Superior and they were just great tasting, nice white meat. I will say that they are some of the ugliest darn things that swim, but they do taste fantastic if you take the time to prepare them right. Pherris
Hey the tail meat is great eating. I simmer them in 7up and then dip in butter. Hmmmm hmmm good!!!
Cyberfish
they don't need any special prep. I got one on mille lacs, and also one walleye. I fillet them both and cut the filletes into nuggets and fried them in butter. the Burbot was better than the eye. the walleye had just a slight muddy flavor in the mudline. only thing i would say to do special may be to rinse the meat really good after cleaning, they are slimy devils
Guest
What's how they look got to do with anything?(I admit I think many fish are beautiful and I admire the wonder of most every fish that I catch, but what's the two main qualities desired by a fisherman?)If you fish for sport, what matters is how they fight. If your fish for food, what matters is how they taste. And the pout has the perfect combination of a good fighter that tastes excellent.By the way Knoppers, tell that guy who got sick from eating pout that he's supposed to cook them before he eats 'em. G_man
Please don't call a walleye ... ugly.
Cyberfish
What does a fish have to have to be considered ugly? I think pout are cool looking. only time they are gross is if you freeze and thaw em out, then the slime just oozes off em. I bet to a male pout, a fat female pout looks sleek n sexy Best time to fillet them is just when they are starting to freeze, then there is no slime. Has anyone ever tried the liver? I met someone from sweden that loved the livers boiled in cream. He said they turn white and arew quite tasty.GEM EYE GUY, I knew you would show up here soon or later haha. We had a great gemfishing outing on buffalo lake with Bonin, and tiffany and three kids. it was their first time ice fishing, they all got fish. they really had fun learning to see the crappies on the vexilar and getting em to bite. they all want to go again! Steve Foss
Hey G-man, if it hurts to hear a walleye called "ugly," imagine how I feel about the abuse taken by the lowly old catfish. Bottom-feeding, scum-sucking, mud dwellers, etc. Sheesh, some people have NO sensitivity. I don't know if throwing eelpout on the ice is illegal, except that throwing any fish on the ice and leaving it is littering. In Minnesota, there is a regulation against "wanton waste" of fish, but I don't know if the eelpout is included, since it's not a managed species (no limits, seasons, etc). Anyone? Guest
I don't know how pout got the nick name lawyers, probably because they are slipery buggers???I think they look pretty cool too. They have a great looking camo pattern on them. I fillet them same as any other fish too, they only have a backstrap, and a tail portion anyway.Boil them in 7-UP,sounds pretty good! I think I will try that next time.
Cyberfish
Catfish, it is illegal, if you don't want your lawy--uh Burbot, I would be glad to take em provided they are fresh.I think catfish are cool looking, and are fun to fight. Not my favorite for eatin' though
Steve Foss
Cyb: You can't have my pout. I eat 'em. As for catfish on the table, Mrs. Catfish has a Cajun blackened catfish recipe that'll knock your socks off. First time she fixed it was in a closed kitchen. We learned the hard way to open the windows when it's Cajun cooking.

Poutmaster
A long slender body with splashes of yellow and brown. A nice little goatee hanging from it's lower lip. And when you pull it from the hole, it just wants to give your arm a big hug. I wish my wife was as nice as these little guys.... ------------------Flag Up! Dr. Bob
Whats the difference between a Lawyer and a Pout? On of 'em is a scum sucking bottom feeder that's lower than whale $hit. The other ones a fish! [This message has been edited by Dr. Bob (edited 01-05-2003).]

Crawlerman
Well... it IS a freshwater Cod; and if you look at a picture of it's famous commercial saltwater cod (which accounts for the majoirty of food fish in the nation.. think fish sticks, MCD's, the Gordon man, Fish Fries at the VFW... ALL Cod!) they look almost identical. So my question is; if it is a freshwater cod wouldn't they taste/have simmilar texture to their commercial cousins?I mean look at Catfish- they are also some of the "ugliest" fish; but they have among the finest tasting meat. Walleyes are not all that attractive too with the wacky eyes and offset teeth. Halibut is another commerical food fish, and there are not many fish uglier then them! So... maybe the uglier the better the fish tastes, eh?
humpback
i would like to try eating one but how do you clean them.i have never seen it done and no one has ever explained it to me. does anyone want to give it a try?
Steve Foss
Every time I've done it, I've just filleted it like normal, taken off the skin, sliced the fillet lengthwise, thrown out the belly meat and kept the backstraps. I've always been told the bottom half of the fillet is really fatty, so have always just kept the top half.
Crawlerman
Catfish are great! You just might have had the bad expereince of getting one with a muddy flavor or something. If they are not caught out of clean water this will happen. I got a really fishy tasting walleye from a Restaurnt once that tasted so bad it almost made me sick.. yet that didn't change my views on eating them; though I would take cat caught out of clean water any day. Also-- Bullheads for some reason don't have nearly as much flavor as channel cats-- same texture but no flavor in the meat-- you pretty much need to fix em special.
