Behave; Youngsters Hunting this Weekend

It’s our first time out this year. We’re heading' north, and my niece is joining us as an observer. All you hunters use your BEST behavior. It came to my attention recently that many hunters, even on this site, don't think how their bad habits might effect someone else's hunt. I'm excited for her to have a positive experience.

Last year my nephew had his first hunt and got a buck! I shot a doe with an arrow wound in the back knee. Kind of cool, it wouldn't have made the winter, and the meat was fine.

I settled for helping butcher my brother-in law's 14 pointer last weekend...beautiful deer!

Yeah. That's what I suggest. Come on this forum and admonish some of the nicer sportsmen you'll ever meet. And even if they weren't good folk, do you really expect bad guys to heed your words? Doesn't make much sense, but for you; OK. I'll act like I always do, and I bet everyone else here will as well.

I did take some pictures, but I had 35mm slide film in my Nikon N90S and the roll isn't done. Maybe I can get some others emailed to me and I'll put them up.

There is a thread going right now about how more sportsmen and women are quality people then the opposite.

There will always be the latter, but its important to teach your niece that not everyone is perfect. That applies to everything. I do think that many times people forget their manners because they assume that deer hunting is not only a "manly" pursuit, but they are on a vacation.

I think its great that you're taking a kid out there and showing her the ropes. We can't shield them from everything, only educate them about the right way to act and hopefully it will rub off on those around you.

I share your respect for the vast amount of FMers. I let some bother me too much. Yeah, I guess I should join some kind of Optimist's Club; I really was imagining improvement. I suppose your right about my odds of that.

I've found many FMers helpful: knowledgeable answers and information, good laughs, valuable book recommendations, lots of other things. I've met a few and enjoyed talking to them.

Thanks, sound advice. I do have three boys myself ages 10, 10, and 7; so I understand what you are saying.

I'm curious, anybody else been deer hunting with a teenage girl? How did it go?

I took my 13 year old out last year, she got bored really quick. If she has a game boy or something like that, have her bring it, and make sure she dresses warm enough.

It's really a New Age of deer hunting with our nieces sharing the field, how cool is that ! I can think of a few old practices, that the vast majority of us would never do, that don't hold up if you imagine someone's niece on the same piece of public land. PowerStroke is right, she'll learn from it.

I haven't taken anyone out personally this year, but ti will happen next year. I have a 12yr old sister who is itching to go and I have two daughters also. The experience Idid have is that my buddy's wife came hunting for the first time this year.

Make sure your niece is comfortable with going to the bathroom outside and has some TP with her. Make sure she's warm enough (aren't women always cold?!?). And of course make sure she has a way to stay entertained. A book or handheld game is good, even just the yatzee or poker ones are fine.

The most important thing with girls is about how they learn. Girls like to be encouraged and praised. Usually with boys we challenge them and motivate them with things like "being a man" or "tough guy". Girls don't respond to that and will usually turn away from it. SO, make it fun for her and always be enthusiastic and supportive.
