Mille Lacs Rentals

Wallyeyes

Recommended Posts

I am looking to rent a house for two in mid-January on Mille Lacs. This trip is for our tenth wedding anniversary.(My wife had thought that an ice fishing trip to the big water would be a good way to spend some quality time together. It was actually her suggestion! Can you believe how lucky I am?)

Anyway, I am looking at renting houses from FM-Millelacs's, Appeldoorn's, Brandt's or Twin Pines.

Foremost of my concerns is her comfort. I don't want a run down house with poor amenities. Secondly, the quality of fishing must be good to great. And finally, I would rather not spend a fortune. We will be there(somewhere) mid-week and I've seen all the rates for the above listed resorts and they are all reasonable.

Now my question is, has anyone been to these places and is any one better than the others. I am looking for positive reports and I know you have to take the good with the bad, but please don't bash on anyone too hard.

I really want to hear about the positive aspects of these different places or if you have another suggestion to add, feel free.

This will be our first trip like this and I would like to be able to go again in the future, so I need to make this trip a great expirience for both of us.

Thanks in advance for all the input. It is much appreciated.

Shoot, this was supposed to go into the other thread with the same title. Sorry.

"Foremost of my concerns is her comfort"

Then, check out Hunter Winfields! You'll be glad you did. Margie has the resort setup perfect for summer and winter that any woman would enjoy.

Here's how Hunter Windfield's is set up for summer

Hunter Winfield's Review

And the wheel houses they had then were nice. I believe some newer, decked out wheel houses are coming in for this ice season, too.

Wallyeyes,

We are finishing up a REALLY NICE house and will soon be posting pictures of it. It is an 8 holer complete with TV/DVD Player, Underwater Camera, Fireplace...yes fireplace!, Range with oven, indoor bathroom, all powered by an "onboard" generator. Interior is all knotty pine. Midweek prices are very reasonable as you buy two nights and get a 3rd night free. grin.gif

Another vote for hunter winfields. Houses have everything you could want in a fishhouse and they have a stove so you can cook a pizza in the middle of the night while you are catching fish. They will also be at the ice show if you want to check out the houses.

This is Margie posting as my late partner liked to refer to himself as...a Harry Angler...

In the spirit of keeping our houses top of the line and woman friendly smile.gif - We just picked up two new DreamShaks this year - our new 8x16 wheel house has 4 bunks, flat screen / DVD player, stove/oven and a king dome satellite dish - our regular satelites were tested last year and were iffy with the wind...this we believe will hold up!! When booking this house ask for the DreamShak 8x16.

As our second year on the ice, we are looking forward to it. We keep praying for cold weather to set the ice in on the Bay...

Come by and see us at the Ice Show in St. Paul this November 30 - December 2nd - we'll have one of our new houses on display...weekends are booking up fast already but we are offering mid-week specials for those of you that can break away - book two weekdays and get the 3rd free or book 1 night and get the second 1/2 off (Sunday - Thurs - excluding holidays).

I cannot compete with Appledorn's ice house fireplace though - they are top notch! Go Paulie!

Also note that we are also starting construction this week on an new lake front cabin - all log with a loft - it will be ready this winter with packages for day houses on the ice...call us for more info.

Watch for Dave's post this winter Wallygator2148 or call him directly for the latest info - 320.676.1100.

Hope to see you soon!

Margie

Margie,

Thank you for the kind words!!

I just referred a guy to you that was looking to do some fishing while he watched the football games. Told him the Dreamshack with the Dome Dish would be the way to go smile.gif

Here's a sneak peek at the new one that is close...but not quite finished.

All fancy things aside, if you're looking for a house on Mille Lacs you simply cannot go wrong by going thru Paul and Appeldoorn's. 'nuf said!

Just a reminder to see us at the St. Paul Ice Show - we also have great cabins with day houses for those that want to be on land at night...new Amish built cabin up on the hill overlooking the lake - with a loft overlooking the main room - call us for details!

We also have portables for rent with guiding available - we'll set up your house for the day...and move you all day long if need be!

I haven't even rented from Appledorns yet and I would have to say I'm extremely impressed with the help Paul Waldowski has given me. Questions were answered quickly and Paul offered me a few different options, since one member of my family can't make her mind up. I might just end up with my own small wheelhouse, but I will be going out of Appledorn's access at a minimum. Thanks Paul.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
