Hi guys I bought a strikmaster ice auger mag 2000 brand new last year, and it starts hard for some reason even the day i bought it. I has the compression button but the only way I can get it started is if I hold the throttle wide open and have the full choke on and pull like 20 times then it starts and runs great! and when its warm it takes like 1-2 pulls after that, but when its cold it starts hard? can sombody give me some advice? confused.gif

Bring her in to service center in Big Lake! Could be a number of things.

Auger does not move when you pull it over, does it?

I have had to the strike master 2000 mag for many years now and it is the most reliable thing I own. I will admit, I do not take care of it that well but it works every year!

I do not know, but I would say at least a year! Better get her in before a year and before they get backed up at first ice! I was up there a couple months ago and BSing with Mike K and he said that first ice was their "Boom" time!

Good luck!

Are you using that nasty tecumseh oil? Go to the equipment repair forum and click on the amsoil oil link and get a couple of 1 gallon mix saber oil and try that on the auger. You will be suprised how much easier it starts.

Ice man is correct, with emissions testing, some of the new StrikeMasters (2Strokes) are hard starting because of things done to the motor.. Bring it in to their shop if you have time, and the guys in the service department will set it straight for you.

AMSOIL does help a lot of these machines start much easier, and you say you are already using AMSOIL, but from reading this thread you have a different problem that you need to have looked at under your Strikemaster warranty, my guess is you have some type of carburetion problem.

I had that same issue and I took it to Strikemaster and they replaced the carb on it at no charge. They had apparently gotten a bunch of bad ones from the supplier or something. You might want to call them and tell them what the guy at the authorized dealer said about the carb not being under warranty. They had excellent service the day that I was there. in and out in uner a half hour. Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

There could very well be a problem with your auger.

With my 2hp Jiffy I've found it will not start while using the compression release button when cold.

I put the choke on full, pull until the motor barks(No Compression release) and put the choke on 1/2 way and mine will start right up. You can turn the choke off completly then. I never use the compression release and I've only found it to be actually useable when the motor is up to operating temperature.

A 2-stroke rlies on the piston to create pressure and suck in the air/fuel charge. The compression release reduces compression and makes it difficult to suck in the air/fuel charge from the carburetor.

I had the same problem with a new Lazermag Express. I sent it back to Strikemaster. They replaced the Carb (and the gas tank, I had my name on it, and when I got it back, no name).

They were actually pretty helpful. Best auger I have used as far as cutting.

ya the only way I can get mine started is if I dont use the compression button, put it on full chock, and hold the throttle wide open and pull really fast for like 20 times and then it will start, but when the motor is warm I push in the compression button and 1 pull and it starts right up.

The warranty on your engine on the auger is one year from the date of purchase. The ingition system on the engine is under warranty for five years.

One of the problems that you have is the fixed jet carb that is being used today, due to epa regulations. I have seen many of these that will not deliver enough fuel at start speed or low speed in cold weather. Due to epa regulations, you cannot purchase a larger primary jet for the carb. Any authorized Tecumseh dealer should repair this at no charge under the factory warranty.

The other problem you may have is the igniton coil setting. In Michigan, we see a lot of hard starting with these engines if the igniton coil air gap is not correct. This is an easy fix for any good shop.

I have been repairing these and other air cooled engines for the last 37 years. They can drive you nuts.

Good luck

Harry

Your right on.

The carbs they put on pretty much every small engine is junk. I plan on swapping the carb out on my Jiffy if I ever have problems with it. If they would just make the carbs with adjustable high and low speed needles it would make a huge difference and the engine could be brought into tune rather easily.

I always run stabil in all my gas year round. All the ethanol in the gas makes it not last long. I also put a fuel filter on my Jiffy. Its a large scale gasoline filter used on R/C boats.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
