Haven't you learned yet? There could be a 1/2 inch hole in the ice and something will fall through it grin.gif

4WE

First off I got an old strikemaster 10" 3.5 horse, shes a hoss. Weighs a ton, but is so fast its unreal, now that I got er tuned up good. Have you seen the new strikemaster 4 strokes.....they are amazing, they start like nothing and are super light, cause the auger part is plastic. 8 in is fine, ive pulled plenty of 26-28 inch walleye outa a 8 inch hole including the one in the pic.

Oh yeah and speaking of 10 inch holes being good sized for a boot.....I took my step brother out fishing a few years back and right after I got the holes drilled I turned around and there he went up to the crotch, it was pretty hard not to laugh histaricly, I probably did. Helped him out and we fished for the rest of the day, with the sunflower heater on him...What a guy.

....also the 10 inch holes are really good at catching stuff....like when your buddy kicks your lantern down the hole......in the middle of the crappie bite.......and then has the audacity to laugh, and say "haha watch it go down on the Vexilar"........I'm shaking my head right now...good times. So I am looking for a good jig to try and snag it with, grab a flyer. tie on and i'm jiging it for a few minutes and I feel pressure. No way....pull it up and there it is, the most amazing part is I let it dry out a few minutes, put some new mantles on and she fires right up. Coleman makes a heck of a product.

For pannies I usually run a 7-inch hole and for just about everything else I run an 8-inch hole... however, it all depends on where I'm fishing... if I know there's a good chance of hooking a big pike on panfish gear then I might run an 8-inch hole for pannies... but on hardcore pannie hunts I'll go with a 7...

I'm surprised more people didn't get into brands. What's with Michigan guys and those LOUD Jiffy's. That comment about watching the lantern go down on the Vex was classic. I woke up my sleeping dog with laughter. I agree with everyone, 8" in a portable is fine. Sounds like I'm like most of you, and can get sloppy or clutzy on the ice. I'm fearing the day I send my Marcum down the hole. This great ice with no snow always makes it interesting watching things slide towards the hole. If you ever get into wheel house fishing, you have to have the 10" with four blades. It's a heavy one, but cuts great holes. In early and late ice or the BWCA there's nothing like a sharp 6" hand auger. Of course the key is remembering your auger. Three years ago a buddy and I drove an hour or so into Wisconsin, got to the lake and realized the auger was in the wheel house back home. Glad they had a sale on augers at the local hardware/bait store. That's a good way to justify to the wife why you NEED three augers. Good luck to ya!

I've been running an 8" auger almost 10 yrs and would replace it with another 8" if I were to purchase another auger. Can't complain about the size for that type of fishing you described.

I had always ran 10 inch Jiffys till last year then I switched to my Nils. I thought the 8" would be tough to get used to. But it really isn't that bad at all the speed and weight make up for the smaller hole in my opinion. I have fished 8" alot one just has to be careful to get the head started and not just try and force them through the hole. Force them and you will loose fish. I have lost some decent pike in 8" but typically I don't fish pike so not a hugh deal.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
