Licence for portable

kb: Your better make sure this is right before you go and do it. I was under the assuption that any house you placed on the ice had to have a license on it. Thus the permanent would need a license if it was out.

ak: I printed my DL# out on a piece of paper and then laminated it and now stick the license to it covering the previous year with the current. I used a paper punch to make the holes to hang it with and then fasten it right over the door or top front depending on which portable I'm using.

My permanent I laminated also but I took 2 pieces of 1/4" clear plastic (about 10x12) and sealed it in between the 2 sheets with silicone. Anchored it to thw house with sheet metal screws that I gobbed with sillicone to prevent losing them. And then do the same with the license.

its true, you only need one lic. even if you have 10 houses on 10 diferent lakes, as long as the one thats occupied has the lic. all the houses need to have a name/address or Dl#. to be on the lake permanently, and reflectors on all sides. so if your in a house and you loaned out one to your buds, ya better have 2 lic.

I've noticed all the newer portables have pockets and sleeves for the license and nametags. The new Fish Trap Line also have the reflective fabric sewn in.

I have an older Fish Trap, and what I did was buy one of those automobile "sunvisor insurance card and registration holder". It's a black card, basically, that also has a clear plastic window. I just attached it to the inside of the portable with safety pins so it hangs in the window. It can be seen from the outside. Your portable license also needs to be displayed within 6" of your door (or opening), so placing that in the window is also a good idea, that way the DNR officer has everything there and will leave you alone!

I could have sworn that they changed that rule last year that you only need to have your lisence with you as long as you are occupying the portable house, and I thought you no longer needed to print your name and stuff on the portables. Maybe it was only a proposal and was never passed.

Hiya,
Big Dave2 - you do need to have your name, etc. on portables. Trust me. I talked my way out of a ticket Monday. I have my info on a card which I pin to the canvas on my fish trap. Well, of course, I forgot to pin it on. Got checked by a CO, and my Trap was licensed, but I didn't have my name on it. He told me it'd cost me, until I pointed out I hadn't been fishing in it, so it was basically a sled full of fishing dump at that point. I was kidding him a little, since I expected to get a ticket and wouldn't really have argued if I'd gotten one - I WAS suppsoed to have my info on there and knew it, I just spaced it off, so bad on me. But, he saw the humor, and told me not to fish in it that day, which I didn't and probably wouldn't have anyhow - it was 45 degrees...

Point is, yeah, you do need your name and address or DL number on portables... Mine's on there now, in black magic marker. Can't trust my memory to keep me out of getting a nice fine...

Cheers,
RK

I think Big Dave is right, we went through all this last spring, if I remember right all that needs to be licensed is the house that is being fished out of, but I think that the house needs to be labeled as far as name or DL number even when not in use. But as far as license only when in use, if I remember it right from last spring.

tight lines to all. <((((><

Here is how it reads in the 2002 Minnesota Fishing Regulations Booklet page 42. The words "while fishing" are the key but still is probably left up to the Co for his interpetation at that time.
• All shelters, which include dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters, placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have the complete name and complete address or driver’s license number of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters and figures at least 2 inches in height. Dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while fishing must be licensed, except that a license is not required on border waters with Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota. A durable tag, furnished with
the license, must be attached to the exterior side of the door not more than 6 inches below the top of the door. On structures with openings other than doors, the tag must be attached to the material to the right of the opening when facing the structure, no more than 6 inches below the top of the opening.

I have also talked my way out of a fine for not haveing my info on my shelter. It did have a license on the outside, I just never thought they would enforce this dumb rule about name and address. Especially since our info is available on the shelter tag, and portables are generally occupied. Shelter tags are b.s. anyways. Do any other sates even have them?

The way I read the law is you have to have your address OR DL#. Personally I do not and will not put my DL# on either of my houses. Your DL# can be used in fraudulant ways just like your SS#.
I got tagged on Winni a few years ago. I had purchased a license, but I had left it on my other house. Anyone fishing Winni had better have everything in order, I have never met CO's more fussy than those guys. Anyone else had problems there?

How can your driver's license # be used fraudulantly (like your SS#)? I'd like to hear how that is possible. You can't assume much identity with a driver's license #...it's not like getting around the IRS.

I personally use my driver's license # without my name so nobody knows who I am wink.gif

CD,
I worked for a retail company a couple of years ago. Without going into to many details, a person who had stolen a wallet was able to use a DL# to access enough info on that person to fill out a credit ap and make a purchase. There were mistakes made by the customer service person, but it can happen.

I guess anything can happen. I don't think there is much risk to a DL# because a crook would have to know a lot more personal information to do more harm. I think you have more risk of being a victim of fraud with your mail sitting in your mail box, using your credit card at any retail store, etc...

My name and address on my fish house gives me more weeby geebies than my DL# on there alone. Just my $.02

I agree with CD, if you have your name and address on your portable, everyone knows your sitting on a frozen lake and there is a good chance that your house is empty, or your wife and small childen are home alone. I would rather someone try's to get a credit card, then break into my house when my wife is home alone. Just too easy when your address is out there for everyone to see. That's the way I look at it.
