Question on selling a ATV..

I'm trying to sell my ATV and want to make sure my ducks are in a row when the time comes. Is there actual titles for ATV's or is it just the registration card that your supposed to carry with you? I can't seem to recall if I ever recieved a title, I don't think so. If it is just the registration card do I just give that to the buyer along with a copy of a bill of sale? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

ATVs normally only come with a certificate of origin when purchased new, not an actual title. The registration card is what you need to transfer it. If you sell your ATV.....it says in small print on your registration card that you are to "deliver this card to the owner who must submit it with an application for transfer to the MN DNR within 15 days"

A bill of sale is might not be a bad idea in addition to the registration transfer. Proof of sale is important to the seller too.

I sold a wheeler recently, the guy said he wasnt concernd with the registration because he only drives it on private land, should I be concernd that he wont transfer it, or should I not worry about it?

First off in Minnesota you MUST register an ATV even if it it used exclusively on private land. (a farce in my opinion but thats another thread) What I would be the most concerned about is, if the person it was sold to uses it for some type of illegal activity, (trespass, poaching...ETC) and it was reported by the old registration it would still list to you. May or may not be a problem but why risk the hassle?

I agree with Macgyver55, I would contact buyer and be sure he WILL transfer it, otherwise take a copy of your bill of sale and contact DNR, explain situation and have them change name of ownership.

Nowadays you don't want to take chances like this.

It sounds a little harsh but I have always made a copy of the Drivers Liscense of the buyer of any large items like this. I also collect ID for anybody who wants to write a check for anything over $100. I was almost burned by someone wanting to purchase a puppy from me with a check, when I asked for ID he suddenly decided he didn't want the dog, before I required the ID he was ready to put the dog in his truck.

I would think the ownership is more of an issue with the current owner rather than the previous owner. If the new owner fails to register it, he risks the possibility of the previous owner claiming ownership. If I were purchasing I would want to be sure to register it as soon as possible to protect myself.

True enough.. but when it comes to liability matters, say if the new owner let someone ride it and that person was seriously hurt or injured and it still was registered to you, rest assured you would need to come up with something fast to prove you sold it!

True enough, but in todays world a gun is the last thing I'd personally sell without a proof of sale.

How about if we turn this question around. I have purchased a n ATV that has never been registered. Am I going to be able to register it in Minnesota? What does it take?

I believe all you need to do is bring the serial #, frame # and some type of proof of purchase to the local registrar. My brother was able to register one several years ago (that was not used for sometime) without any trouble.

I 1st time registered ATVs before and was never asked for proof of purchase.
