roadkingclasic56
I was out scouting an area that I plan to hunt ducks in and saw there were many wood ducks in the area. Since I am a novice at hunting ducks could someone recommend a good call for wood ducks? I was also wondering if ducks would shy away from mixed species in a decoy spread. I have mallard decoys but no woodies. I want to purchase some woodie and teal decoys but don't know if I should mix them, put out only one type at a time? What do you think? tealitup
Woodies seem to be the most socialable ducks around (in my opinion). Putting out any deeks is great, a couple woodies is even better.A duck call for a woodie is a simple whistle type of call. I think, if I remember, you say "tweet" and a loud/low call. Swill
I use the Duck Commander Woodie call. It sounds just like them, it is cheap, and easy to use.As far as a mixed spread; I usually throw out 8 woodie decoys in small groups along with 2-3 dozen mallards.Good Luck
Bushwacker
I like the Duck Commander woodie call to the best of any I have tried. I like to throw out a half dozen woodie drakes mixed in with a few teal and a couple dozen mallards. That seems to work pretty well for us in most situations. Huntin&Fishin
If any one got the October feild and stream check out the part about the wood duck, that should help
carpshooterdeluxe
cant remember the brand but theres a company that has a 6-in-1 whistle that i use for woodies. seems like i never use it lately though as the woodies always like to show up about 1/2 hour before legal time and dang near smack into me while im throwing out dekes! seriously though ive seen great numbers of wood ducks this year and it should be a busy winter for my taxedermist if i can just quit shredding every male i ever shoot! roadkingclasic56
Thank you for the advice. I went ahead and ordered the wood duck call and a teal call. I stopped in again at dusk to check out the area I will be using the new calls. It was like a major airport with the vast majority of birds being wood ducks. I can see what carpshooterdeluxe is talking about with the taxidermist. The drakes are a sight to behold. I hope I can imitate them with the call. This will be a learning experience. I have seen teal but have not heard them and I am not sure how to use either of the calls. Long slow whistles. Short, loud, and abrupt? Instructions come with the call or is it all with experience? I am anxious to get out there and try. I had to get the ammo out, find a vest. I think the time between now and opener is going to go real slow! Scott M
For teal, shorter tic, tics. For Wood Ducks, a few longer squeals. Sounds like you've heard a few so try and imitate that. I've got a Mick Lacy wood duck call and a Lacy teal call I found in my stocking from "Santa" this christmas so I'll be anxious to use those this early season. commander019
When hunting wood ducks, location is more critical than a call. They are not as responsive to calling as mallards are. Duck commander does make a good woodie call but haydels makes the whine call which woodies use while on the water. The sound most people hear them make is used during flight. They will respond to calling but like I said, location is much more critical.
slimngrizzly
I dont know if calling wood ducks is that effective, but with a Duck Commander Squealer, you can immitate any sound they make perfectly! Awsome calls!
carpshooterdeluxe
i dont every really call woodies, although i do carry a whistle on the lanyard, but they seem to be very predictable as far as when they fly out and when the fly back to a roost. we've got a traffic field for geese that the woodies like to visit every morning while were still setting dekes out. last weekend we got setup early enough so we got to sit in the blinds and watch 200+ ducks circling around us and feeding right in through the dekes. by far and away they are my favorite duck to hunt. i cant wait for opener. jimbo80
You need a call to kill wood ducks???
Crusty old Swede
Another vote for the Duck Commander woodie call. When the woodies head out before shooting time I like to call once or twice every 10 minutes or so. Because it seems one or two always get seperated from the main bunch and come back looking for company. One draw back while it's still dark is they tend call just as they land right next to you and make you darn near jump out of the boat. That and the dog gets all antsy waiting for shooting light so you can deal with that temptation paddling around in the decoys.
