Youth day CHILLY morning???

jbell,

when you took your son hunting did you go alone? Or maybe go later in the morning? I have a 6 year old son and a 4 year old daughter, that will be exposed to duck hunting this year(the thought of it makes me giddy with excitement).

But I'm unsure as to how hard to push them, definitely want to make the first trip a good experience. Some of the first memorys I have of family members is duck hunting, the smell of gunpowder, coffee, and swamp gas....gotta love it!

I take him alone in the morning. He struggles getting up, but after a while he is fine. My 3 year old, I pretty much only take him in the evening. The main thing is keeping them warm. Bring hand warmers, winter clothes, good boots maybe even some old blankets. Even though 40 degrees seems like good duck weather to us, it is really cold for the kids. Last year on really cold mornings, I didn't take him. To me the key seems like as long as they are comfortable they are content and have fun.

This was my last year I could do the youth hunt. I got my 6 ducks while hunting up by winnie. There was more woodies, teal, and mallards than last year but did not see nearly as many diving ducks. I don't know much about wich duck migrates first/last but when do most diving ducks migrate?

Bassmaster, what body of water did you hunt or don't you want to say? There is a little lake up there that I fished on once that looked like a gold mine for duck hunting. I won't put it on here but maybe you hunted it. Post if you choose or I'll email....

Jbell,

I took all my kids when they were quite young. I usually had a shaker call to simulate feeding mallards and the kids got to use it in the boat. That and hot chocolate and cookies made for a great trip for them.

The boys I had out for the youth hunt are both 13 yrs old. My boys are 5 and 7 so here in Wi. there just along for the ride. Heres what I like to bring for the little ones. A back pack with a couple non loud toys (good luck with that one wink.gif) Snacks, juice boxes, extra clothes and gloves. I also let them bring a toy gun and dress them in camo. Let them play with the calls if theres no other hunters close by. Don't forget the lifejackets and ear plugs. Key is to keep them from getting to bored and somedays you might have to leave eariler then you want.

The decline in young hunters is scary and its going to hurt the future of hunting. Its up to us to get kids involved in waterfowl hunting so this great tradition never dies. Good luck hunting

Thats true Outdoor Ran-

I recently heard a statistic that hunting in the midwest has decreased by around 10%, give or take alittle. Its a scary statistic being the population in the world has doubled in the last 40 yrs, and we are still losing our sport.

I doubt it. Im originally from Sheridan WY, and sorry but I dont just give out my name. If we knew one another, Im sure we would have already established it. Good luck in the field.

I didn't ask for your social security number and a copy of your drivers license--I asked for your FIRST NAME...

Sartell is a small town so I figured I might know you--I'm guessing the real reason why you wouldn't allude to your identity is because of the childish ranting you had going on in your recent posts. That's cool though, I saw right through it.

You keep thinkin that Sartell Angler- wink.gif

Not sure what you think your seeing through. People have there days, and I had one last this past week where another person and I had a disagreement. Thats life. Its happens, and Its over. Not sure what you have against me, I dont think Ive ever commented to you on anything before. To be perfectly honest, I hadnt noticed you on this site until you asked me what my name was.

Like I said, I had a disagreement with someone that I took too far, and ended up being disrespectful to. Im man enough to igknowlege that. Just because I was caught me in a weak moment doesnt mean I have any obligation to explain myself(even though I just did), or give you any info about me. I havent been disrespectful to you, please dont be disrespectful to me.

Da chise,

Sorry about the delay, hadn't checked this thread in a while. I don't mind posting it, I took the guys out on Big Rice Lake WMA near Remer. I use the phrase "near Leech" because most people recognize that, I say Remer, most people say "Where?". Sorry if it was misleading....... Probably not what you were looking for. Can exchange emails if you like, I know a few lakes in the area for duckin'.... I think my email is linked to my screen name, give it a shot if you wish.....
