Recommended Posts

Anyone ever hunt this. I applied for this this year and was wondeering what was your opinion on the area and the hunt. I do a lot of bow hunts but never applied for a special season rifle hunt.

I worked with a guy who applied for that hunt every year. The year I was working with him he "settled" for a dandy eight pointer. He was very happy with the hunting there.

I generally drive by the park on Hwy. 48 at least 10 times a year. It was scary once driving by about 1 am. No way of counting all the deer eating in the ditches that night. So many...

Good Luck!

I have done the hunt in the past; if you get off the beaten path you can have areas all to yourself. You will see hunters near the campgrounds and any place that has easy access, so any of the roads that have a pull over spot for trails will have hunters. You have to check in every day at the main gate that is 6 miles from the highway; the big swamp that you will be passing by holds tons of deer. Do your scouting and it could be very rewarding.

Thanks, It is another oppourtunity for hunting. I do have a good rifle spot on Private land in 2A. However being it is second weekend and a few weekdays it seems like a good oppourtunity. For a big deer.

Just remember, you have to tag an antlerless deer first as St. Croix is an earn-a-buck hunt.

I hunt some private land real close to the park, and I'm not sure if I would recommend the area for big bucks been hunting there many years now and we do get some big ones now and then, but nothing like you could find in other areas. Just trying to givve ya a heads up, there are a lot of deer in the area just not a lot of bruisers some 8s lotta baskets. Plus I planted all kinds of good food for them, ol mossy horns is definately gonna be hangin out at my place, if hes out there...... Good luck huntin, whatever you do.

PARKS ARE THE WAY TO GO!!!!!!! Ive hunted O brien long time ago, OL KIpp/Great River Bluffs we did awesome there! and the last 2 yrs we hunt Tettegouche State park on NOrth Shore. The pressure is light to nonexistent in parks until gun season or meduim to none in this park were at now. It was quite an experience hunting natural moving and rutting deer with a gun. normally we set up on escape routes and thick nasty places where deer run to but that turned out dry this yr and after talkign with the ranger and discovering not enough ppl applied for the hunt we set up on rubs and scrapes and funnels and were able to find those deer. The deadline was the sixth of sept, and most hunts are management hunts for does. But mosnter bucks live in those places too and the only thing our parks have in common Is steep rugged terrain and places well off beaten paths where big bucks lurk. Do your homework and scout all day for 2-3 days and then come back with a climber, good clothes, and plenty of food to sit all day and you will shoot deer.
