dear hunting question

I hunt in SW minnesota- with the all season license am i limited to one dear???? or can i take a doe and a buck with my bow??? I read the regulations but they are confusing??

You need to know exactly what permit area you are hunting in. The regulations are available online form the DNR. Check it out. If you are in a permit area then you will need to apply for a doe permit in order to shoot an antlerless deer in your home permit area.

If'n you in a Lottery area, you's only shootin one deer. Be it a doe with permit, or a buck; no more than one total deer in a Lottery area. License type no matter. One deer in a Lottery area for 07.

Because if you are in an area that is Managed or Intensive, you'll be able to shoot multiple deer and extend your hunting season. Or you can travel to a Managed or Intensive zone. Check the maps out to see how the zones you hunt are classified.

Unfortunately the two zones that I hunt the most - 417 and 426 - are lottery zones. I'll probably end up going back to an archery license and a firearms license and just waiting until the right one comes along. Problem is that doe that you passed up in early Oct. sure would look good in Dec. when you're getting ready to eat 'tag soup'. And I'm not going to shoot a doe until I've had a chance to hunt the early rut in late Oct/early Nov!!! My wife is always talking about fall camping and I say no but might have to take her up on it this year.

Blackjack. I hear you. I have already made the decision to try and take the first nice doe or buck that comes along given the one deer limit. A bird in the bag is worth two in the bush as they say.

I do most of my hunting in 442, so I liked the "old" all season license better. It made it much nicer to get some venison and then wait for Mr. Big.

I guess I'll have to do a better job of hitting the Metro sections to get a doe.

lcornice, I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, but is there any possibility the DNR would ever consider allowing up to two deer by archery in lottery areas with an all season? Seems to me the biggest concern voiced was with the use of MLs on does with the all-season license. To me, lumping bows in with MLs is like apples and oranges. I realize that exceptions for bows might make the regs more difficult. But I think they're exceptions worth making, escpecially if the bow doe harvest was not a major factor. Though I'd need to see the numbers from last year before I could make that assumption.

Bowhunters did get a break this year. They don't have to apply for a doe permit like muzzleloader hunters do. The idea of giving archers 2 deer wasn't discussed. In total, they shoot about 10-15% of the total antlerless take in lottery areas. Not a lot but not insignificant either. A bigger discussion was to go bucks only or not. It was felt this was a better compromise for this year. If it doesn't work in some areas, you may see some areas that are bucks only in 2008. My concern is we'll see another increase of parents shooting does for their kids, which is a behavior that really needs to stop. However, that's another topic!

Thanks for the reply lcornice. Great insight. And I appreciate it. Hope it doesn't come that buck only situation. And that is too bad about people tagging for their kids, wife, mother-in-law, etc., to circumvent the system. I would have never even considered that but its too bad some people probably will. Kind of like shoplifting. It screws the rest of us for the future. Instead of higher prices and insurance costs, its lower bag limits and buck only zones in this case. Thanks again.

Yeah, I'm hoping they'll put the All Season back to what it used to be in a year or two.

Since we like to manage our properties I preferred to take a doe or two off of our 120 just from a managment perspective.

Those late season deer get a lot tougher with the bow. That and the fact that I coach a hockey which limits my Dec. time on a deer stand, make it very difficult to rely on late season to put some venison in the freezer.

I also think that the small bucks will take a beating with this policy, at least until the deer numbers go up.

Is the talk for a true bucks only?? Or would it be a gun season like when I was a kid??

442 used to be bucks only for 3-4 days and then anterless hunting for 1-2 days the next weekend. That first day of anterless only sounded like the Hattefields vs. McCoys in the woods.
