Questions about replacing the floor in my 1990 Lund Rebel

ifishsd

Question

Anyone replaced the floor in their boat before?

I got the floor out. Now come the fun part putting the new one back in. The original floor had carpet and was pop-rivetted to the stringers. The pop-rivetts were on top of the carpet. I'm going to put vinyl back down instead of carpet. I'm thinking of doing it the same way as lund did it with the pop-rivetts on top. The question I have is should I use screws or pop-rivetts? Were would I get the pop-rivetts at?

I had an older Lund and did the same thing. I used rivets for the new floor. It worked great. You can get the rivets at Fastenal or any snowmobile repair center. Good luck.

I did a yahoo search. I went to Menard's and they said they don't carry it. I will check a couple of the smaller lumber yards in town to see if they can order it.

Just trying to do as few seams as possible. If I can't find 4x10 plywood locally, I will end up using 4x8 treated plywood. I will also put some thompson water seal on the wood.

Use rivets not screws because screws will work their way loose the first big waves you go through. Also,it's not recommended using treated lumber/plywood for aluminum boats because the chemicals used to treat the wood eats aluminum. My two cents worth.Hope this helps some.Happy flooring, grin.gifgrin.gifc63

Menards can order it. I'm waiting for my sheet of marine plywood. Takes about 10 days for it to show up.

You don't need marine plywood, and Thompson seal is not needed and not suggested also. Do a search here for this subject, you will get tons of results. It's a common subject.

I've sold alot of plywood to people reflooring boats the last few years.

Here are a few facts I know from the lumber end:

1) ACQ treated lumber reacts with aluminum. They shouldn't be used together unless you can prevent direct contact.

2) There are other types of treated lumber that have been available since Jan. 07 that aren't as corrosive as ACQ. But the treated plywood available at most lumber yards is not engineered for horizontal applications, it is designed for verticle applications.

Feedback I have gotten from customers:

1) BC exterior grade plywood works well.

2) Fill any imperfections in the top surface of the plywood with floor levelor rated for exterior use.

3) Coat the plywood with fiberglass resin or a good quality oilbase primer. Make sure you seal the edges.

4) Don't use Thompsons or any other "deck" sealer. The carpet or vinyl adhesive may not stick to it because of parrafin in the sealer.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like I'll be going with BC Exterior plywood and will coat the floor with resin. Hopefully I can get the 4x10 sheets like lund had.

Any brand names on glue for the vinyl?

Brian: Just call Lund. Ask for Tammy. They may sell you the plywood already cut to the correct shape, or just the 4x10 sheets. If they hesitate, just have your lund dealer order it for you. Lund had a lifetime warranty on some boat floors, (for original owners) They may be interested in you being a happy customer and take care of at least the parts even if you are the second owner.
