tims
Im only getting about 39 mph out of my 115 etec on Mr Pike 17 footer. My old 2 stroke Johnson pushed it 46 mph. Feal free to post your boat, motor and top speed.
Northlander
17' Lund Explorer SS with a 115 yamaha 4 stroke and a 13 1/4 by 19 Stainless prop. I would think if all the E-Tec hype is true you should do at least what Im getting. Im getting 43 mph with just me and all my gear and a full tank. With a second guy I get about 40-41. Try some different props and put most of your weight in the back of the boat.If you have prop questions call Jay Soderbloom, he really knows his stuff. www.soderbloom.com
marine_man
Where are you at with respect to RPM? It could be that you don't have the ideal prop for your combination...marine_man
tommyk
I have a 90 E-tec w/ 17" pitch aluminum prop on a Tuffy 1700 Deep V and I can get 38mph under perfect conditions. Weight of boat, motor, batteries, gear, and myself is probably around 2,000 lbs. I would think that your boat, which is similar in size and probably pretty close in weight, would go faster than 39mph with a 115. I would go with marine_mans suggestion on playing with props. My rpms were running way below the recommended WOT so i dropped two inches in pitch and that bumped me up 500 rpms to 5000. Another thing to check for is the height at which the motor is mounted to your transom. Your motor might be mounted too low. It may be quite the process to go through but I would say try some different props and maybe have the motor mounted up a hole, or even two if needed. I think a good indicator of correct height is that the cavitation plate on the motor should be about equal with the bottom of your boat. I still have not tried it all on my boat. I am still planning on trying out a stainless prop and possibly having the motor mounted up one more hole.
shamalex72
1750 Fishhawk, 115 E-Tec, 17 pitch Viper prop, mounted two holes up, at wot I'm turning 5600 rpm. It doesn't seem to matter if I am alone or have four people in the boat, it's always around 41-42 gps. I have tried a 19 pitch ss prop and I could touch 45 gps, but the hole shot wasn't very good and I lost 300 rpm at wot. With the stock aluminum 17 pitch prop I get 39 gps. Dave S
I had a Sylvan Backtroller Select with a 60hp Johnson that gave me a GPS reading of 41mph with just me and minimal gear. The water conditions were perfect with a light ripple and was trimmed out as far as I dare go before it started chine walking. I don't recall what the prop pitch was. On average, with 2 people and gear I would get 34-36 mph.
rollineyes
I've just got a new Etec 50 tiller put on my 1650 Lund Explorer. It has a 13.5x15 prop. It does 30.5 gps with two adults and one 10 year old.
tims
Im hitting about 5800 RPM's at WOT. So it would seems to me that i have the ideal prop. The dealer said they tried a viper 4 blade prop and got it up to 42 mph. Both seem slow to me. So would the next step be raising it a hole? Down Deep
What was the HP on your old 2 stroke? I have a 2007 Explorer Sport with a 115 Merc 4s with a 17 pitch quicksilver prop. I run 39 - 40 WOT with two guys, full tank and gear.
3pronghook
50 etec on 92 crestliner fishhawk dlx does 30 mph loaded....question for rolling eyes; how slow can you go? i can only get down to 2.5 mph forward trolling. i had a 60 evinrude that would go down to 1.3-1.5. i bought the motor used and the tech says they cant idle it any slower. i think its idleing at 800 rpm's. Northlander
I think 42mph is about what you can expect in that set up. Almost all the guys I talk to with 17' tin boats and a 115 4 stroke say 43 mph is their max speed. I believe your RPM's are ok too.
marine_man
RPM Range on your motor should be 5500-6000 You're in the zone, based on you RPM's I'd say your prop is doing the job pretty well... Keep in mind Steve that you've got a Stainless prop on your boat - which is probably getting you 2 mph more... marine_man
Northlander
Ya if you stay with a aluminum prop you wont get into the 40's often. Stainless would be my suggestion unless you fish shallow lakes or rivers a lot.
Northlander
Also if you go stainless call Jay Soderbloom he has some real nice prices on props right now. www.soderbloom.com
