98 Suburban no air

No sign of of fuses blown and my research tells me sending unit. The pump won't engage when the AC button is pushed and when the selector is turned to defrost.

The better half drives this unit the most so the only thing she notices is when the gas is low.

The compressor will also not turn on if it is low enough on freon. I would guess that this has rear air and likely the rear a/c lines going to the rear evaporator core are leaking. The other common issue is the compressor itself leaking. Most places will check the a/c for around $30 plus freon. If it is low they will inject a dye to see where it is leaking.

If you don't know if its low or not than you'll pretty much be shotgunning parts at it. The electronic components although a possibility are rare. 99% of the time they have a leak.

mid to late 90's chevy's are know for having bad air conditioning units. The compressor beats its self to death and it needs to be replaced most often in those years of trucks. Bring it into sombody and have them test it. If it is the compressor hold on to your check book, it going to cost you. Also, be on the look out for leaks with your head gaskets and also your mass intake fitting for your coolant, other than that your truck should be great ;-) Oh, if your fan switches quit on you, check the climate control panel for bad connection on the back. You will need to rip the front panel off the dash to get at it.

It was low on freon. I put in most of a can and the pressure gauge showed good pressure but nothing. The guy at the garage put in more plus dye and the pump kicked on and there was no leaks.

Went through pretty much the same thing with my Suburban. (Have also replaced the compressor twice) If it happens again - check the line going to your rear air. It's an aluminum line ($$$) that corrodes through eventually. I just plugged mine, and run the front air only.. Cheaper to recharge, too.

Have the same problem with 98 Tahoe. Had ac checked and freon put in --- leak in the back lines. Estimate, last year, about $1650 to fix. No way! Asked about just closing the back off but was still expensive, can't remember right now what the estimate was. So no air. SO has a 99 Silverado pickup, guess what?, no ac. compressor does not kick in either. He hasn't taken it in yet - Hoping just low on freon? but sounds more likely a leak or compressor?

Generally speaking if the system is low it has a leak. Whether or not it is large enough to find is the question.

One of my old bosses used to say, "we don't make any friends when it comes to a/c!"

Same problem in 99' Tahoe, leak to rear. Told 'em to plug it. They said that would "upset other systems". Told them to fill it then. They did. So far just fine. The wanted $800 plus to fix rear air line leak.

I can fill it several times for $800. I'd just get rid of the Tahoe but its one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. And I've owne some pretty nice stuff!!
