PIAA Fog/Driving Lights

Who runs PIAA lights and whats your opinions, good or bad?

I'm specifically looking at 520 Series and they will be going on my boat. LOL! Yeah, you read that right. Getting sick of running the spotlight and want something out front so I don't illuminate my bow with the spotlight. My spotlight is one of those Thor 10,000,000 candlepower lights and I love the light quality put off by that spotlight. Its halogen, very white, and projects a long way.

A few things I'm looking at are...

Fog vs. Driving

Ion Crystal vs White bulbs

From my research, I'm really leaning towards 520 Series SMR for the white bulbs. You can only get these in driving (projecting beam) which should be alright. I think these lights would be most similar to my current spotlight.

Also... for those running the 520 Ion Fog Lights, how is the light? I understand it is fairly yellow but does a good job cutting through the fog. The river gets very foggy at night sometimes, to the point where a spotlight is even worthless. Any opinions here, will they work or will I have snowstorm style visibility in the fog with them.

I had some Pia's on my truck until they were stolen again. not sure on the model number.

I haven't replaced them and probably won't mainly because I rarely used them, I guess they worked OK in Fog but to me they were/are more for looks.

I think they would be helpfull on the river although FOG is FOG no matter what lighting your using.

I know it would look awesome for sure.

Me and a buddy used to have fog lights on duck hunting/carp shooting jon boat. Never got around to using them though so I can't say how well they worked.

I have a set on my truck under the front bumper. Model 2100XT. They have a white light. I like them much better than the cheap ones I had before. If I remember correctly, there was no advantage to yellow vs. white for a fog light. Looked into it quite a bit before buying them 3 years ago.

I have the PIAA 540 Driving lights on my grill guard. So far, I really like them. I have them wired up to come on with my brights. MAN does that make them BRIGHT! What I've noticed is that road signs become blinding with the PIAAs on. I bought them to extend the range of my high beams, and it worked.

I think you'll be happy with PIAA if you go that route.

And Happy B-Day! I'm less then a month away from hitting the big 29 myself. I keep wondering how it's snuck up so fast!

First Chris, Happy birthday You know the first to go when you get old is the eye sight, even when you say not. One way to overcome failing eye sight is very bright lights. You haven't been bumping into things on the river again have you??

On another note, I took my 10,000,000 candlepower Thor spotlight and made a few modifications to it.

#1- Removed that freakin' depthfinder battery from it. That cut the weight in half.

#2- Wired on a cigarrette lighter adapter to the battery connections so I can directly plug into a 12v accessory outlet.

#3- Removed the funky flip folding stand.

After using it last night, I'm impressed. I can actually hold it above my head for more than 5 minutes without my shoulder falling off.

The DC connection that comes with the light I believe is just a charging jack. Whenever I've run with the DC connection in place, the light starts to dim after about 5 minutes. It seriously dims. Now with it hardwired straight to my deep cycle, it glows bright white all night!
