First musky 51"

Recommended Posts

About a week ago i ventured down to the mississippi and caught my first musky. 51" with a huge head. I brought a pic to the local dispatch and the put it in the paper. Ill post a few pics also. What i was wondering is what the weight of this fish was? How common are 50" muskies in Minnesota?

Congrats ont the catch! All muskies are not built the same, and by the looks of it, she is an old spawned out female. I would guess that fish, post spawn was probably 25-27lbs. A lot of folks like to throw the "30Lb" phrase around a lot, but it takes a serious fish to be a true 30+lber. Now that you got a 51, its time to get a 52"!

Dances-She definately looks like she been around the block a few times. That is one massive shovel head. It also looks like you had a good battle on your hands, congrats.

Hiya -

First of all - CONGRATS on the fish! Must have been a pretty good brawl landing her from shore...

As someone already said, looks like a newly spawned-out female. They can look pretty rough right after spawn (they get pretty rough when they're making little muskies...). Hard to say without having the thing in hand, but I'd bet the fish was in the 26-28 pound range.

Man what a melon on that thing though.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

I'd agree, it's a long fish, but compare the head to the rest of the body. Length isn't everything, for example, up in Ontario my dad caught a 46-47" pike, but it was so fat it went 26-27 pounds. I'd say that's upper 20s.
