Morson Report

I was up the 18th, 19th, & 20th. Fished for crappies & perch on Friday. Got about 25 crappies and 5 big clean perch. There were 9 of us in 2 boats. Had a great meal. Saturday we fished out of Buena Vistas Resort. Hired a guide to lighten the load in our 2 boats and maybe show us some new spots. Kept moving all day. Fished about a dozen shallow sandy areas in 8 to 12 feet of water. Didn't do to well but did manage 2 fish each by days end. Those fish came in deeper water off points 18 to 26 feet. Also caught about 20 JUMBOS in the same areas. Clean fillets. On Sunday we were on our own again. 9 large adults in 2 boats. Found small fish everywhere but the last spot. There we released a 30'', 26'', & a 24'' along with 6 smallies. We also kept 9 walleyes in the 18" range. These fish were all caught in about 2 hours. It made for one of the best trips my group has ever been on. Can't wait to get back up. I'll try to post pics later. WFT

Wellfed... That's a first... Someone admitting they caught perch on the world's greatest walleye lake!

I'm headed up tomorrow for 5 days. The weather forecast makes it look like the lake may re-freeze. But we'll give it a shot and report back Tuesday. We will NOT be mentioning any perch....

I heard 15 feet near rocky points for the larger member of the walleye family. Shouldn't be too long until they head to the sand, if the water warms up.

See ya all on the water. I'll have my winter parka on.

I'm heading up with the family Friday, too. I've also heard the rock points with sand are giving up some walleyes. Highs will be in the 50's and lows . . . maybe I should bring up the ice gear . . .

We'll be fishing around the Manitou, Hanson Bay and Rabbit areas I'd imagine. We'll be in a green and tan 20' Lund Fisherman with an HPDI on back if anyone wants to say hi.

We'll also be up this weekend. Thanks for the reports. I didn't think that Genz had Memorial Day weekend in mind when he created Ice Armor. Hardly matters, I'm packing it anyway.

Black & Tan Cliner Sportfish with 140 Suzuki.

fished opener out of Hanson Bay area, we did very good in the Rabbit Island area mostly 10-16 feet, spinners and minnows. Smaller fish seemed to be on the sand we mainly fished rocks as usual. Even with the front moving in Friday night we did well, water was around 56 degrees. Northeast wind.

I see your from Medina. I live in Corcoran. We've probably seen each other at Countryside. I remember having breakfast by some guys who were talking about LOTW one time, but wouldn't be able to pick them out of a crowd or a lineup for that matter.

Rabbit's pretty big and a vague location which is probably justified. I once casted almost the entire south shore rip rap for smallies to no avail. My buddy has a cabin (island actually) west of Blueberry. The spots he has around the cabinaren't producing and Inever see anybody fishing close by. I think I'm stuck travelling farther. I have tried the north side where everybody seems to congregate, with minor succcess. I seem to feed them, more than catch them. It'd be interesting to compare notes, especially if you're catching them. My buddy's dad used to guide a long time ago, but it was up in Miles Bay which is even further. when a kids inthe boat, that's a long way to travel....

I lived in Medina for a year - I believe a few blocks from LL. You don't have to go very far from where you are to catch 'eyes.

Honestly, just get out the map and look for sand bays (generally with rock points and rip rap) and you'll be fishing the ideal structure for this time of year. There's really no secrets and no need to travel too far. The Rabbit Point area is a good start. There's also a bunch of bays south of Pork point that are great this time of year. Jig and minnow is all you need.

We really worked hard to find the walleyes. They sure weren't in the traditional early spots. Once we did, we found ourselves fishing many of our traditional fall spots in 24-30 feet. Most were bays or island with deep points.

All we found in the traditional sand bays/rock in 6-12 feet were smallies - which were fun too. Fishing in Saturdays weather was - errr - a tad challanging, but Sunday and Monday sure made up for it, eh.

One good evening....

From the marine radio chatter I'd guess most people had a slower than hoped for weekend. I didn't get on the water much at all because of wind, cold, rain and chores. Way too many chores! I fished maybe five hours over four days!

Water temp actually went down two degrees, from 58 to 56, from Friday to Sunday. That's how cold it was!

If the wind never blew again, I'd be happy. I've grown to hate wind. I'd much rather have it glass calm. But enough rant...

We did find a honey hole on Sunday night thanks to Benelli Dude's dad. Classic sand beach with rocky point and pine flys buzzing all around. The walleyes hit mostly around 12 feet, but as shallow as 8 and as deep as 18.

WHITE jigs with minnows or, just as well, Powerbait Twister Tails when we ran out of minnows.

Caught many 15 inchers with biggest 22'' We caught fish steady for a couple hours before sunset with NO WIND!!! And a warm sun!!! It was a great evening on the water with a couple kids laughing and goofing around with us.

Thats all I have to report. We head back up in 9 days!

We fished last Wed, Thur and Fri. We did well on a combination of typical Spring and typical Fall spots. The wind was never too bad on the days we fished but Saturday, the 26th, morning the wind was strong from the East and by the time we were driving out of Mylies it started raining pretty steady. I was okay going home in weather like that. We got some much needed rain up there too. Average size of the fish we caught were typical for a May trip.

How much do you think the water came up?

We go out of the same spot as you, Eastwind, but head east by Blueberry. Do you stay at that resort or have a cabin?

Water came up 3 inches on my post from Thursday night to Monday afternoon, some of that could have been wind driven but the wind switched a few times so probably not.

AND, they got another nearly inch of rain in Baudette on Tuesday!!!

Our crops are saved!

Fished Sunday and Monday. Fish were tough to find for us also. Lots of moving around. Picked up a few small ones in traditional spring spots. Got skunked on Brule for the first time in years on Memorial Day.

Back up on Friday to give it another go.

Whole new experience for me this year. My son in now 4 years old and is proving to be a great fishing buddy. He may not put many in the livewell but he is deadly in the minnow bucket. Gives a whole new meaning to being on the water. It's all about the fishing, not so much the catching.

Hey Wild Thing! Dad told me that you all got into some walleyes that day. Get any pictures? He doesnt have any metal in thumb any more so he goes back to work in 2 weeks. Dont think I will get up there this weekend cuz the wife has a cousin coming up and wants to fish LOTW ( MN side ) and maybe URL. Hopefully the weather is decent. I took the week of July 4th off and I plan to fish up there a couple days then. Maybe next time you are up you can take the old man and show him where the big ones are. Hope all is well! B-dude

B-dude.

Glad Brian 1 is doing okay, and Dianne, too, I hope.

Great news for you, we will be up there for 9 days over July 4th week! You are so lucky, you may even get to fish with me!

I was too busy landing fish to take photos. But I am going to bring him a glossy of Birdie with that big walleye from March. Next trip I'll actually put the digital in the boat. Still haven't got the cobwebs out of the fishing brain yet.

We'll be up Thursday night through Monday next week as well!

Take care!
