minnow traps

I got a guy that I work with asking about minnow traps. He bought one and put it in a stream or creek leading into a lake at his cabin. He said that it has lots of minnows and they swarm around the trap but he pulls it up empty all the time. Do you need to bait them? Any help would be great. I have no idea as well as my co-workers.

Bread, Cat or dog food work great.

winter fresh gum, You can leave it in the for a long time and the minnows are atrracted to it or something

We use the end pieces of torn up bread and be sure to place the trap openings facing up and down stream.

Cheese clothe or onion bag with dog food in it, don't forget to put some wieght in it to hold it down or the minnows will just pick at the top of the trap. Make sure the V is the right direction so they can swim in, Minnows don't do reverse so well.

Don't let the minnows die. Had that happen on me. About half of them died and a couple of opportunistic bullheads at them right up. They had some big bellies on them. I've had good luck with dog food.

Just throw in the ends of your bread loafs...always has gotten me plenty of rainbow chubs...never have to pay fo minnows either!
