Team Format Contest

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd put out a little feeler and see if there was any interest.

I've tried this last year on another catfish site and was thinking it would be fun to try here.

If this violates any forum policy, feel free to yank the post and forget I mentioned it grin.gif

Basically all who are interested would be split up into teams of say 3 or 4. Each person would be able to register their largest Flat and their largest Channel. I prefer the measurement method and would use length/girth. Example 40" long and 24" girth would be 64 points. Once a fish is entered another fish has to be at least 5 points (total) higher than previous fish in order to enter again. Example 42" long and 26" girth couldn't be entered because it's 68 total and only 4 points more.

At the end of contest all team points are added up and the highest wins.

There would be no boundaries. Fish would have to be caught on rod and reel, and blues would not count.

There would be no money involved, however maybe we could round up some sort of prize(s). As most fisherman know, bragging rights go a long way. wink.gif

In order for a fish to qualify there would have to be a clear picture that shows the fish and also a control item.

Just thought I'd throw this out and see who might be interested. Please serious interest only. Nothing worse that having team members that signed up "for the heck of it" but never fishes. I have a feeling that wouldn't happen here though.

All skill levels and experience would be encouraged to "play" as well as shore anglers.

Not only would I think it would be fun, it might give team members who haven't met, a chance to meet and fish with each other. No requirement though as everyone could fish on their own.

It would also give me reason to head north for those sumo kitties.

Like I really need a reason.

I would be willing to coordinate and administrate this as well.

For a time frame, I was thinking May 1 - Oct 28

The start could be delayed a bit to gather more interest if there is not enough.

I guess I would like to see at least 4 teams of 4 if possible.

Hopefully more.

If this goes ahead, we probably need a name too.

The suggestion box is open

I agree, it would definitely be cool.

As for forum policy, I don't think we would be breaking any rules. Its just a friendly little online contest amongst us catters. The turkey forum has a team format contest going for the spring turkey hunt this year.

I will be firing up the "Big Cat Safari 2007" topic again, maybe that could qualify bonus points or something.

Wow...sounds like fun! I think I fish enough to be play...but I'm NOT anything close to a pro! I wouldn't want to be the weak link in the chain confused.gif

So..this is what I picture....

Everytime you go out fishing and catch a "big" cat (no blues), you take measurements and pictures with proof, and submit them here? Now at the end of the contest, the points will be added up and the winners will be the team with the most points? So...this isn't down to ONLY fish caught while fishing with the random teams? Does this make sense? grin.gif

I don't think Darren wants to limit the contest with boundaries, maybe state boundaries but that would be it.

We would split up into teams. Team members wouldn't have to fish together, although it would probably be a good idea to hook up once or twice. You know, a friendship, camaraderie building exercise. smile.gif We could fish individually wherever & whenever we wanted. The "team" technically exists in the virtual world.

It might be kind of interesting to have a monthly score, and then the monthly scores are added up to a total score. It would be kind of interesting to develop a system that rewards both big fish, and numbers of bigger fish.

Mind if I jump in with a question?

I would like to join up once or twice with you guys. But because of distance I sure couldn't be a very good team member. Because I wouldn't get to go very often. But, I was wondering if somehow there was an open seat available at short notice it could be posted on here to let a greenhorn like myself know?

I only had two chances to fish the Mn. River last year, both being a very good time, and would like to go again this year.

Dtro, Hanson, Papa Grump, Steele, Larry, Brian, Dave, Kevin, and others, you guys have been a really good help.

hmm...sounds like a we're going to build it as we go. But it does sound fun! I don't think the point scale would be too fair for those who don't fish as much. I'm guessing different catagories would fix this. The most fish/point, the largest channel/flat, etc. Just a few ideas.

Hope I didn't scare you guys with the not fishing enough to participate statement. Don't worry about not fishing that much. Here's the good thing about this format. Time on the water helps for sure, but it's not crucial. Remember, we are only counting your biggest fish. So any fish is going to help, because at that point it is your biggest fish. Also you could catch your points in one night and not bump it up all season. I don't like the idea of a being a team temporary. And I would like to have the teams for the entire season, so they could be called the 2007 champs. I will explain more this evening when I have more time. But like I said, don't worry about having to fish every other day or every weekend. Just getting out a couple times a month will suffice.

It all sounds real good to me,But with the majority of catters way down stream of me their chance of large fish out weighs my chance greatly.DNR told me not much chance of over 40 by GraniteFalls,But stated from Morton down Chances pick up greatly! so basicly I'd be in knowing I would'nt win.But with overall fish I'd stand a chance.

The only problem I see with rewarding numbers of big fish is, that it may keep other from playing as the advantage goes to some that fish cats 3-4 times a week.

I would be all for the team consept with a annual total. One could keep a monthly to see what teams are where.

Thats where the "team" concept comes into play.

Lets say a team consists of 4 people and we are going with largest of each species per person.

Team Member #1 enters their personal best channel cat & flathead cat. (length + girth)

Team Member #2 enters their personal best channel cat & flathead cat. (length + girth)

Team Member #3 enters their personal best channel cat & flathead cat. (length + girth)

Team Member #4 enters their personal best channel cat & flathead cat. (length + girth)

Add those totals up and you have your team score. Highest team score wins bragging rights I guess.

Hanson,

You have the correct format.

Guys/Gals

Don't worry about the size if the fish your going to catch. Its about giving us a little extra reason to fish. (Not that we need it). If you think that your going to get out and catch some cats this summer it really doesn't matter how many times you get out, or how big the fish are. Hopefully some one on the team will bag a big one.... if not, no big deal.

I did a few of these last year and DTRO got in one or two as well. As I recall I think that he pulled in the largest fish for his team, and we were fishing with guys from all around the country. The majority being southern boys. (No offense)

Its such an easy format, what you see is what you get. No money in. Just for sport and bragging rights.

The only request is if you hope to get out fishing but don't really have the intention of doing so please do not take a seat on a team. If you think that you can get out at least 3 or more times over the summer. GO FOR IT!!! You don't have to fish with anyone on your team, though it's encouraged. This is just a way to bring a group of cat guys together.

Dtro, were you going to put a time limit on when fish pictures would need to be submitted after they are caught.

Can this be a CPR contest as well? I would rather not see big ones harvested for the sake of a photo. (maybe this was already covered)

Also too.... you will need a digital camera for this, No picture with the control item, no counting the cat.

You can fish this contest in conjunction with other contests as well, those that are cat league/ or any other contest fisherman, Just keep it in mind and remember that you do need a pic with a control item. (I made that mistake last year on my season biggie.

Sign up!!!!!! Its a blast.

thanks

LFC
