floor rotten

Question

We have a 79 or 80 Mr. Pike with the rear floor being rotten. Was wondering, how big a job it is to replace?I've seen some posts about not using marine grade plywood. What's better?Where can you get it?Do we need to replace the whole floor? One corner is bad.Should we think about replacing the whole floor?

If its just a spot thats rotten then do a patch. Remove what ever storage compartments or side panel you have in the area to be patched. Carefully pull back the carpet to give you enough room to work on the area.

Set the blade depth of a circular saw to the thickness of the plywood. Cut out enough to get into good wood. Sharing the this patch with a stringer isn't necessary. Use glue and screws to attach strips of plywood as nailers. These will go on the underside of the floor leaving a couple inchs around the hole to glue and screw your patch to. Nailers and patch should be coated with poly or a resin as well as the cut in the floor. Fill the seam/joint around the patch and floor with a water proof filler, otherwise it'll show through the carpet. Water putty will work fine for that but be sure to seal that when your done. For the patch use any AC-BC plywood(same thickness as your floor)and seal all sides and edges.

This should last longer then the rest of the floor.

Tip, if you leave a gas can or whatever in the same spot on your floor thats where its going to rot because it doesn't get a chance to dry out.

Look at Floor carpeting in this forum then try, Building a casting Deck in Boats & motors. It'll help your decision on materials! I'd do whole floor with new carpet, few days work. You could patch but like remodeling you never know what you'll find. Also try to keep the piece your removing to use as a template,If your not experienced at intracate cuts you'll want the pattern!!!
