1. Welcome to FM, its informative, fun, nice people, and kills time at work. Good fishin.

2. Yes, I do have the same issue from time to time. If she had no hobbies, I doubt I would ever get to go. (at least she thinks so... wink.gif)

I hear you loud and clear. My wife has come around quite a bit since she started ice fishing, but it's never a bad idea to inform her and get her out there to show her how it really is on a lake. The news is the most widely available (yet least informed it seems at times) method of getting information about ice out there, and they always err on the safe side. Check the ice out for yourself at all times of the year!!!. If you are getting to risky ice, bring a buddy, some ice picks around your neck, and a rope at the very least. Life preservers and a ladder also if you are reeeeaaly pushing it.

Best thing to do is to go to a lake with her, but don't force her to do anything without you doing it first, and that includes walking to a new area on the ice. You both might learn something.

I took mine wife fishing with me last night. The access was a little rough but once on the lake she was fine (we used a ATV) And once we were fishing the weather was great and the sounds of spring were everywhere. It is the best time to be fishing (no fish house required). We also caught our limit of crappies and some large bonus sunfish. She can't waite to go again tonight.

Take you significant other fishing once and awhile you will get out more. Take from someone who has been married for more then 20 years!!

I was out on Turtle Lake a couple days ago and I walked by a leaf that had been sitting on the ice, well the sun had a pretty good go with this leaf, it melted it's footprint at least 6 inches in. I wish I would have had my camera with. This was the last time I am going out on the ice this season.

I walked out on Long Lake the same day and I had to get on the ice from the dock I was out maybe 20 ft diagonal to the left, and, the ice started flexing about 6 inches...It was an amazing feeling, and, with every step back to the dock my shorts got fuller.. shocked.gifblush.gifgrin.gif.

Of course I did not tell the Mrs. wink.gif

I am not sure that I would fish on 6 inched at this time of the year. 6 inches in March is diiferent than 6 in December. Thats my opinion anyhow

I have to agree! 6 inches of ice at this time of the year in your area just is not safe! shocked.gif It could easily turn into mush ice during the day while you are fishing if the sun is shining!

I was out on Long with my brother on Sunday and it was pretty solid, drove by yesterday and checked it out - went home and put the auger up in the rafters. I'm done for the year.

it was slush for the first 8-10 feet from shore... i checked the ice under the slush and it was a solid 8 inches.... i continued out checking the ice for weak spots and ice thickness, being very careful... once i got out 8 feet or so it was solid ice no slush. and around 8 inches of ice in some spots.. 6 in others... i felt pretty safe out there...

the only non-safe part was the lady text messaging me while fishing ... i missed 2 or 3 for that reason... haha.. crazy.gif

i still love her. grin.gif

Been there, The better half is always worried about the ice. It could be 3feet thick and she would say " your sure we can walk on it right!" then I look at her and state well if it gets any warmer it might not be a good idea. Ohhh how much i love her

I will walk out on just about any type of new ice but I am also very wary of black ice and thin at that. My season is done.

After 40+ years of ice fishing I have never gone through and dont plan on it. For her sake, I would probably not go out on the late ice as she is very concerned about you and going down. Its one thing if there is 15 inches of ice but when one gets down to inches and bad ice at that, whats a fish worth?

I agree, as much as I love fishing, I love being dry and safe. No fish is worth that. I had a good season, but the gear is going up in the rafters this weekend and the Voyeager is getting pulled up to the rafters. Time to Golf. grin.gif

I was lectured by a secretary working at a repair shop as I was getting my auger worked on. She said I should not be out on the ice. We only had darn near 3 feet in Canada last week!

PS - What kind of hardcore music do you like?

Shoot me an email if you are interested in chatting some more. A list coming off the top of my head would be almost identical to yours. ATB are one of the best up and coming acts I have heard in a long time. They about tore the roof off of Triple Rock a month ago. Were you there?

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
