Who will Maturi Hire for Gophers Mens Hoops Job?

Just wondering what everyones thoughts are. I have heard rumors about Flip, Trent Tucker and Rick Majerus. I firmly believe it won't be any of those. Flip isn't going to leave the Pistons. Right now they are the favorites to win the East and even if he wanted to come, the U of M won't wait until summer to find out(at least I hope they won't). Trent Tuckers isn't gonna be the guy, he just isn't and if they wanted Majerus, what in the world are they waiting for. The high school seasons are wrapping up and we are losing scouting time for recruits. I have no idea why, but I am leaning toward Tony Bennett(his dad Dick Bennett coached at Wisconsin). He is at Washington State, they were picked to finish dead last in the conference and will probably take 2nd. He is a midwestern guy and I think he would be a great fit. What do you think??

i think you are right about not getting those three guys, majerus would be cool, but i don't see that. bennet would be awesome. i'm not a gopher guy, so i don't know about assistants or famous alumni. was tony on dad's bench as a coach? he was a marquette guy wasn't he?

Flip would be the best option but I don't think it will happen.

All I know is we need a dynamic personality and recruiter otherwise it's going to be more of the same.

We need a big name.

I agree that we need a strong recruiter with a dynamic personality. I'd like to see Trent Tucker on the coaching staff but not as the head coach just yet. Flip won't be available until June, can't wait for him.

Not sure if we want a big name now to bring the program back immediately or bring in a young go getter to gradually bring the program back from the ground up. Monson was supposedly the young go-getter - didn't work so well. I'd like to see the likes of Majerus now, grooming Trent Tucker to take over in a few years.

I am in the minority but I still tink Flip will be the guy. I think he is fed up with the over paid, rap-cultered, over paid punks (I know there are exceptions) that he has to deal with in the NBA. It isn't an easy job and money cannot be a motivator anymore.

One fact that points me in this direction is that his son who plays on the Gophers (and is a team captain) redshirted this year. I realize he had a pre-season injury, but rumor has it he would have been able to return for a good chunk of the season.

Like many my choice of coaches would be Flip, Majerus and Knight. The younger Bennett also interests me.

The next few weks will be key. If Maturi stalls, Flip is the guy as he is waiting for the NBA season to end. Who knows he may pull the trigger earlier to secure a young up and comer...

The great thing about basketball is that it only takes 2-3 really good recuits to turn a program around.

Lets hope he makes the right decision. Its early but i think the new footabll coach has potential to be really good.

I think Flip would be an okay fit, I don't think it is as easy as people think to go from the Pros to the NBA and vice versa so I am not sold yet. The main reason I hope they don't hire Flip is how long they would have to wait. We have already gone a whole season without a face to the program and we don't need that any longer. My vote is for Tony Bennett, but I don't think he will leave Wash State and then Majerus, even though he is a short term solution.

I heard on espn radio that with the Michigan opening that maybe Bennett would be offered that job--but than one of the "experts" asked why he would take that job when he turned down the Gophers job with some big money attached to it. Has anyone else heard this? I might have not been listening close enough, but I really though that this is what they said!

I have not heard that, but I don't think we will get any of the top candidates. I don't think Bennett will leave Wash St. Minnesota is at least 3-4 yrs away from being respectable and with only 1 scholarship to offer and no real talent on the current team, we may have to settle for our 10th choice
