Ok perch boys...

Ok perch boys I have question for you and you can pick on me while at it.

I was out scouting on Upper Red for crappies and stumbled into a couple of spots that 9-11 inch perch were both consistant and constant. Some 12 inchers mixed in. Now the smallest was 9", nothing smaller. Is this a fish worth chasing for the avid perch guy? I know it sounds odd but I am a pike/muskie guy that scouts for crappies so I was actaully a little upset when the perch kept coming up the hole (looking for crappies). Are these nice perch or are they just perch? How about you guys, good thing?

I would say that they are good perch and with a year or two more growth, you may be onto a very decent bite to compare with other very good perch lakes.

I would say that the size you are catching are Jumbo's without the J.

Maybe you think they are just bait for your big snot rockets Jonny. wink.gif

Good for that lake. I perch fish often and now I have a personal minimum length for keeping them whic is 10" or above. It's just to much of a pain to try to clean those smaller ones. So yes those are good perch and from the sounds of it getting better every year. The bigger schools of perch are harder to find. I would keep a meal or 2 but doubt if you don't find them in another spot it would be hard to continue to find perch of that size for very long. I seem to find the same sizes in certain areas of the lake. Although this year has been a shallow bite considering the lack of snow fall until recently.

9-11 inchers are good ones - probably not "jumbos" by a lot of guy's standards, but definately good ones, definately keepers. Now a 12 incher, I think pretty much everyone would call that a jumbo.

Those perch that are driving you crazy are tailor-made for the guys that want to take their kids out for some action and some keepers smile.gif

They all want the crappies.

Thats it, I'm going out to catch some of these perch and get a feel for them. It was actaully was kinda fun catching those things. Of course I kept thinking "wonder how many pike are sitting of to the side watcing these perch struggle".

Lots of guys drive to winni to catch 9-11's. Leech hasn't put out many 12+ in the last couple years. Only Mille Lacs & LOW really seems to have Jumbos. JPetrowski your close to Blackduck, Cass, and Pike Bay do they get true Jumbo's? I'm always looking.

Devils Lake, ND has jumbos.

Seems like a really tough lake to fish on though from what my buddies say? I have friends that have made the trip for 3 years in a row....usually a 4-5 day trip and have never been able to find em....I told them maybe seek out a guide for the first day or two the next trip??

You got it correct Blake Lake Gogebic is a FISH FACTORY for monster jumbos if you can find them. I live about 15 minutes away and I fish it about 3-5 times a week during March. I was out yesterday and I caught 13 the smallest being 1lb and the biggest being 1.15oz. I am working on a stinger mount over the past few years. I have 3 in the freezer a 2.7, 2.4, and a 2.3. I need to get 2 more this year that are 2.3 or better to compete what I want. I dont keep anything over 10 inches if I want a meal and sometimes it is hard to get that becuase they are just bigger than normal.

Here is a pic of a buddy that has this in his bait shop. Over the past few years I have sold him a few perch so he could finish this mount.

"So I go out in search of some more of the nice perch I have been getting. I have thousands in GPS equipment, the best rods I can get my hands on, all sorts of perch lures, perch plastics and even the Marcum Camera to watch the perch. I enter in the super secret waypoint called "perch town" and off I go...then I get stuck. I have electronics, rods, reels, underwater cameras, even the digital camera to take some pictures of the perch in "perchtown" but do you think I would have a shovel?

So I am stuck and awaiting to be rescued from middle of nowhere, might as well drill a hole and fish while I wait. Wouldn't you know it I land on the crappie mother load? I have fish on the ice, fish in the bucket, I'm trying to keep fish from flopping back into the hole while I am catching another...but I still have no shovel and I am still stranded.

Finaly my rescue squad arrives, backs up to my truck and gets stuck...would you think he had a shovel? So now I am three hours into my perch fishing trip and I have a limit of crappies (not the targeted perch)flopping in a bag while I am taking turns digging out a truck with a ice skimmer and the top of a Weber grill.

I think I might have to stick with crappies and pike, this perch fishing is brutal. "

Wow those are some nice Perch!! I would have to say that those 9-11" perch are nice keeper perch but not jumbos!! I woudl have to say that a minimum length for a jumbo perch would be 12.5". With a good fat perch thats gonna put you around the 1 lb mark. A true sumo would be a 14"+ perch which is around 1.5-2 lbs! They are not easy to catch in any numbers but when you get one that big to the hole and you have never seen one that big before your eyes pop out like golf balls!! lol

I did a 14" by accident fishing sunnies on a little lake by Walker years ago, looked like a freak of nature.

Mark, I figure Mr. Nelson was close by all the heck breaking loose.
