Tie a piece or rope around the center of a piece of 2x2 or 2x4(foot or-so-long)--drill a hole on each end of your house outside---drop the board down the hole and tie the other end of the rope to the house

I took 4 old "window weights"(these are made of cast iron and were used years ago to help raise windows on a pulley system)I drilled my 4 holes and tied them to each corner and dropped them down the hole a couple of feet.

For those concerned: I purchased a pair of the (NEW style) clam ice anchors and used them for the first time yesterday. They work great, very convenient. I got them off the-clam.com HSOforum because I couldn't find the new style(with a hand-hold) in the stores. The old style clam ice anchors look like an I-bolt.

Sounds like a great idea kgm. I wonder if it would work equally well with my mother-in-law. But I have to come up with a way with keeping her out of the house. I'm thinking a short length of rope and one of those folding camping chairs smile.gif

I usually tie the pull rope from the portable to my gas auger..
it works for me..

But, if you're going to leave the shack for a "long" period of time, The piece of wood crossways in a hole out-side the shack, seems to be an easy enough method to keep it from "kiting" across the lake.

I go and steal the big northerns that the spear guys throw out their door. I then tie them on to a piece of rope and put one on each corner of the house. HEE HEE! Just kiddin you spear guys! Whewww hoooo.

Farden brought out this portable TV/radio thing the first time out this year. Made by Yorx. What a piece of junk. I call it the bank gift. (Like those cheesy gifts you get when you open an account at the bank) I keep it in the house for added weight and to keep the extra cloth on the ice when it’s windy. That’s about all it’s good for.

I use the 22 cm Smiley Ice Screws and they are awesome. These are the screws that ice climbers tie in when they climb mountains. Ice divers also use them to tether themselves to the top of the ice.

I tried the so-called eye-bolt screws that the outdoor sells and hated them. I couldn't get them to go into the ice, and when I did get them in they would slip out. This is trouble when the wind is blowing and you're trying to get your house cemented. The Smiley screws enter the ice quickly and you can crank them down amazingly fast with the organ grinder knob on the top.

The downside is that they are $35 a pop, but they were worth it to me. They are so strong you could probably winch your vehicle out of being stuck with them, with a tow strap and a come-along. Find them on rei.com in the ice climbing section.

I was wondering if you, bradb, were going to post on this topic.

Hey everyone. Old, but not too ugly (yet), brad aint lying. I saw his screw in hooks. If you tied the space shuttle to these things it would lift the ice off the lake. They aren't to bad for satisfying a case of B.I. either.

I use a 1/4" mechanics speed wrench with the proper bit and use a 2" to a 2 1/2" deck screw use the speed wrench to spin the screw into the ice it will NOT come out. Put the screw in a corner or where you want it out of the way. Remember the more snow the longer the screw needs to be, I have found that 2 2" screws will hold my Shappell shack in alot of wind. I usually turn the shack so that the narrow side with the door is to the wind and use the downwind side door.
