I have some hy-fax runners I'm going to be putting on my fish trap guide. This things are 1/2" thick by oh I'd say 1 1/2". It say's to drill through and use the self tapping screws. My question is has anyone had any problems with the screws pulling through or should I say pulling out? Or should a person use stove bolts with a nut & washer on the inside.

Thanks, boxcar46

Not sure on the screws, my voyeager had screws and locknuts. One helpful hint for you is to use a heat gun as you are bending the hyfax on your sled. (Saw that tip on the site from someone else, What a great tip.) I lined mine up and started from the middle and worked my way out. Worked a lot better I thought then trying to start on one end. My friend did his Yukon the same way and agreed.

Use small screws with washer and nuts.Self tapers will just pull out.You have to countersink the holes on the ice side so the heads of the screws wont drag.Hope this helps some.Oh yea if you dont have a heat gun you can use a small propane torch or just boil the ends you want to bend in water for 10 min. or so.c63 smile.gif

I installed my own homemade hyfax made out of teflon strips on the bottom of my Otter Sled. Here is the BEST thing to do: Go to Fastenal and get yourself some 1 1/2" Elevator bolts. They are like a carriage bolt, but have a flat head. Next, countersink the holes using a 1" forstner bit. Do not use a speedbor bit because it will drill too deep on the sides of the hole. Next use a 9/64 bit to drill the holes through the sled and the hyfax then install the bolts with a large fender washer on the inside. It is easier to use locktite blue and regular nuts than nylock nuts.

This has worker great for me.

Hope this helps,

Justin

Not sure where JustinG got his, but some guys were getting their strips from United States Plastic Corporation. Type that in on google or another serch site and you should find their HSOforum. You can buy 5' long strips that you will have to drill and size for your seld, but they are cheaper than buying the ones from the store. This item is still on my to do list this fall.

I checked U.S. Plastic but all I found was 1 inch sq. teflon at $8 per foot. What did you get? I just replaced 2 runners on my sled and had a (Contact Us Please) of a time getting out the old bolts.

You need to go the Sheet/Rod/Shapes tab. Then go to the UHMW selection and there should be some 1/2" thick by 1 1/2" wide selections there for about $1.80/LF I think you have to buy them in 5' sections so a 5' section would run about $9 each. I am not sure what size you need, I am only guessing what size I will need, still need to check.I have not ordered these yet, so I would contact customer service to see how you have to order them, 5' sections or 10' sections. As as the bolts go, get a dremel. Best buy I ever made, has saved me a many hours trying to get bolts out.

I made some out of pps. they were a little soft (but free) so I explored getting hyfax (UHMV). I found it thru Mcmaster for around $60. Before shipping. That was for (6) 5' pieces. I decided that by the time I add the holes (in a pattern not shotgun) and countersink the holes (took me 2.5 hrs for 6 pieces) it wasn't worth it. I bought the ones from otter. Done!

You will have a hard time finding that kind of teflon material for making your own home made hyfax. My dad is a carpenter who frequently works in the mines and they use that material for forming around pipes and odd shapes. He gets scraps of all shapes and thicknesses. I just cut strips to the right length and width using a skill saw. The stuff he gave me wears like iron. I can drag my otter right down gravel and asphalt and it won't even phase it. I have no idea where you cn find it.

Sorry I can't help out,

J

I just picked up some for my yukon at the home depot. I used the plastic trim they have there in the millwork isle. The stuff is made out of vinyl and bought the bolts there also. The whole thing done for under $20. I used boiling water to form the strips around the front and rear of the tub. It seemed to work real well. They are certainly better than those cheesy runners you can buy for the clams for $50.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
