Goldfish as bait?

I tried it once when I was younger and didn't know any better. I thought that fish liked like bait and they also like colorful bait so narutally i thought live colorful bait is the way to go.

I put one under a tip up for a few hours and got nothing. I atleast had enough sense not to release any into the lake.

Probably not worth the chance of getting those little buggers reproducing in the lake.

From the MN DNR HSOforum:

Regulated invasive and unlisted nonnative species

Regulated and unlisted invasive species are legal to possess, sell, buy, and transport, but they may not be introduced into a free-living state, such as being released or planted in public waters. The regulated invasive species are:

Fish

alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus)*

carp, koi (Cyprinus carpio)*

goldfish (Carassius auratus)*

rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax)*

tilapia (Oneochromis, Sartheradon, and Tilapia spp.)

So it is very illegal to use them as bait since you could

loose them into the lake.

Vados in spring lake park sells "Albino crappie minnows"--which are actually light orange in color-used em a couple of years ago and did okay on craps, but not sure if they work better than usual. Also heard from someone that orange or red gives a signal to other fish that it means "danger",or stay away! Just what i heard, but sounds logical

My heart sank..why you have to say it like that? frown.gif

That got me thinking...Why does my head suddenly hurt and where is that burning rubber smell coming from?

I have all those multicolored jigs, plus all the ones that glow in multi colors. If I could have been only buying black and gray, just different sizes and shapes? I could have boughten something else... smirk.gif

I am going to go curl up in the corner and cry...even though this was meant to be on the lighter side, what if it were true?

All the bright colors were only produced to catch our eyes, they have found a way to corner the market on people that suffer from ADD. The fish really do not care what color it is, just make it glow. wouldn't that be something. tongue.gif

I am just another sucker for pretty rainbow colors...OH NO, DOES THIS MEAN I AM...NOOOOOO. crazy.gif Yes crazy, what were you thinking. confused.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Funny stuff. A Neuroscience Professor (Dwight Burkhardt) at the U of M actually showed that our state fish sees Red, Orange, Yellow, and Green best, those colors in the middle of the spectrum of visible light. However, remember that some of those colors are absorbed below a certain depth, so your red jig in 45' of water probably does look gray to the fish.
