Tackle Storage Ideas

gunflint

Question

Does anyone have a well organized way of organizing spare tackle? We're way beyond tackle boxes and bags here. Thousands of jigs, hundreds of Crankbaits, rig components, reel spools, and so on. I've got 3 large hard tackle boxes, several cardboard boxes and my daily Cabela's large tackle bag all full to the gills and I still have stuff laying around. And I'm just an open water fisherman who hits the water about 150 times a year. I can't imagine what you crazy hard water guys must have. It's getting to the point that I'm buying stuff that I already have because I forget that I have it. Any ideas?

i don't have near that much stuff, but! i would suggest getting a old dresser ( dietzs' idea) and store some in there. i prefer to use a large peg board, and hook system, where i can see what i have, and don't have. even old file cabinets could work. course it depends alot on how much space you have too. my $.02 del

For storing fly tying and lure making supplies I use Plano 3731 boxes. For beads and other small parts I use small compartment boxes (Plano makes a few, Gander has a few that are nice) and then store them in the Plano's. For crankbaits and such my wife and I both use B&B bait boxes of various sizes. My wife and mine main tackle boxes utilize Plano 3600 boxes and we use others for storing extra lures of various types. For example, I have a few 3600 boxes that are setup for Steelhead fishing and a few setup for trout. When we go out Steelhead or trout fishing (with spinning gear) we just swap out boxes from the tackle box and go.

If you have a digital camera you could take pictures of all your stuff and file it in a folder on you pc. This works very well if you keep it in the back of your garage or storage shed and going out is time consuming. Also, catageorize you tackle like a bait shop does and go from there. You may want to consider white peg board and hang things like a bait store would do. Being very organized is by no means the cheapest way to go. I hate to admit it, but I was in your situation where I bought stuff because I could not find it. It MAY be a little cheaper to buy stuff that you can't find, depending what it is you cannot find. For me, it is a lot cheaper to be able to find the stuff because it is very frustrating to not find something you just bought. Here is what I have done.
