It really depends on the weight of the lures you are fishing, and not necessarily the species of fish you are after, although there is definitely a correlation between bigger lures and larger fish.

For panfish, when I'm fishing 1/32oz jigs and smaller, I use the L spring. It is the one with the orange dot on it. Once you start getting into heavier jigs, you need to either slide the spring into the grommet further, or move up to the next spring. If you don't, the spring "hangs" down to far and doesn't do its job properly.

I'm sorry to say but I don't have much experience with the other springs, just the orange (L) and recently picked up the pink (M) and haven't used it yet.

I thought they for St Croix Legend ice rods exclusively because the tip of the rod has two guides, one for the line and the other for the spring bober insert. Am I wrong? I don't like the Frabil ones because once the temp gets too cold they ice up.

Calvinist,

I improvised, and the results are great! Here's a link that explains what I did.

I'll look at the size of the guide later and get back to you. Anyhow, I got it at Cabelas. From memory, I smashed the ceramic ring out and the hole that remained was a quarter inch. I got some tiny grommets at Ace Hardware. They've got a eighth inch hole in them and are designed to fit in a quarter inch hole (perfect, huh? grin.gif).

From there, I put the grommet it the guide, epoxied the guide to the end of the rod, wrapped it tightly with thread, then coated the thread with expoxy. It's not perfect, but it looks pretty darn good and does the job very well.

Like I said, if my camera wasn't broken, I'd take a few pictures. E-mail me if you have any more specific questions (check in my profile for the address).
