Where are you fishing this Ice Season?

I know for most it depends on where the best bite is happenning at the moment. But where and when are you guys planning on specific ice trips this season. I have a few days to plan come mid December, I'm not real sure where I'll go. What's on tap this season from you die-hards?

Mid January I will make my annual trip to Webster, SD and Fish Waubay and the surrounding lakes. Usually go for 2 to 2 1/2 days and spend around 27-30 hours on the lake. Usually get our limits on perch and a good number of crappie and walleyes.

Jason,

I'll be heading up your direction for the Brainerd Ice Extraveganza again.

I'd also like to rent some sleepers on Mille Lacs for a weekend.

One of my primary goals for this ice season is to catch a lake trout, but that trip in not planned yet.

I'm hitting Waubay in SoDak a few times.

I'm planning in Hitting Red lake for the first time.

I also cannot miss the Cool Cats on Ice. That's a must event.

Other than that, I'll try to make as many Ice Leader events as I can, and fish as often as I can (or my family lets me smile.gif )

I would like to hit a few new areas this year and learn more bodies of water. I'm sure I'll still hit my tried and true, as well as attend several of the IceLeader Get Togethers... Cool Cats is always a fun one smile.gif

If there's big pannies in it, then I'll try and fish it wink.gif

I hope to start on my home lake Thanksgiving weekend. There is a bay that is very protected with a sharp break next to shore. It is 19 feet deep about 60 feet off shore. That has been a good early spot for years. Some years this spot will have 3-4 inches of ice while the main basin is still open.

As soon as Ottertail has good ice, I will concentrate my fishing there until early January.

An early ice trip to the NW Angle of LOW is also tentatively planned, with another one, and possibly two for February and March.

Gissert,

The NW Angle is awesome! I'd probably rank it as one of my top ice fishing destinations (I've never been there in the open water, so it could be on that list as well). A ton of species to be caught... walleye, pike, perch, crappies, smallies, whitefish, eelpout... the list goes on and on. We went in March and it was phenomenal fishing...

OK, you twisted my arm, the NW Angle is going to be one of my destinations again this winter smile.gif

I have a drop-down sleeper for this year. So, this year should (fingers crossed) be unlike previous years for me with many more options.

I think that my big trip will be a URL/LOW combo. I'm planning several "head up Saturday morning, home Sunday" Mille Lacs runs.

I'm also hoping to fish with a few more FMers (not to be confused with MFers).

Where am I fishing this season?? Hmmmm...

I still have my permanent shack on Upper Red so I'll make the trip up that way 4-5 times this winter.

Going to hit Lake of the Woods a couple more times as well. Probably do it early again and maybe late for the tip-up pike fishing.

I don't think I can have a winter without fishing with Jim Hudson up on Chequamegon. Last winter was a blast catching those smallies. We'll be on the lookout for that 22" or hopefully going deep for lakers if the ice is good.

Might have to swing out to Devil's Lake as well this winter too!

Mille Lacs is on my list this winter. I really need to fish Mille Lacs more. They had a heck of a jumbo perch bite last winter and the big walleyes are on the feed this fall as well.

Horseshoe Chain for Channel Cats, a few of the Ultimate Panfish League events, and we'll be looking at open water and the flathead catfish bite! WooHoo!

Yep the Angle is my favorite spot, hands down. No matter where I am at, the Angle is always in the back of my mind. Started going there in 1996 renting a fishhouse and getting the bomber rides to the shack.

Now that has evolved into full portable missions all over the map from Moose Bay to spots south of Garden Island.

We have not done the crappie thing yet, but plan to next year.

The "Burbot Hole" is something the wife and I started to fish last March. The current is very strong there, so caution is a must. The burbot bite was not very good while we were there, but we did catch a few. It seemed odd to be ice fishing in such current. I ended up drilling a hole outside my Otter for the vex, as the current was pulling the jigs quite a ways out from the fishing hole.

You are right - I need to get there in the open water too.

Mille Lacs is on my list again this year. The bite has been too good there to miss out on that action for walleyes. I always spend a lot of time on our lakes locally (Gull, North Long, Round, and some smaller panfish lakes). I'm debating on planning a LOTW trip for mid December. I know I can catch lots of fish here or Mille Lacs during that time. How is the walleye size going to be this winter up on Lake of the Woods? I know it can't be beat for numbers.

Can't wait.

Will have a permenant shack out on Pike Bay this year and have 2 portables to hit up any other lakes from Cass to Winnie to Red.

Also have my best buddy has a permenant for Waconia this season when I don't feel like driving the full 7 hours. Looking forward to a great Ice season.

Hope everyone is planning to make it to at least one Ice Leaders event it should be a great time. laugh.gif

As soon as we can get the drop downs out on ML by atv I think I'm going to plant it out of Red door, Barnacles, or the Wharf not sure on wich one more than likely it will be a combo of all three, the Fish will let me know ware to go.

Red lake it also on the list, that is always fun and now we can keep a few of those eye's cool.gif

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
