Go to fall lures?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, the end is coming quick for me and am still hoping to get a legal 'ski. I was wondering what types of lures are good 'go to' lures in the fall. The lake I fish alot is already showing mid to upper 50 degrees throughout the lake. Should I be slowing my presentations down? Ive been doing alot of slow rolling spinnerbaits and chatterbaits and prop style topwaters. Can I still burn baits like bucktails and work jerkbaits fast? Should I continue with the slower presentations and maybe throw some big jigs or plastics in the mix?

I guess to simplify it. At what temp range do muskies start getting a little lethargic?

This is about the time of year I like to twitch big cranks like Jake's and Grandma's, big plastics like Bulldawgs and jig plastic combo's have a place in my boat as well. Bucktails will continue to produce as well. This time of the year is great...

My go to Fall lure without a doubt is a weighted Suick with color fit for the lake type you fish. It is a Big, slow moving lure that to me is a great fall weapon. I was just up In Canada and by the end of the week anything but a Suick was struggling hard on action for our group. My second choice would be a depth raider, jointed...but cranking that thing all day will kill you

P.s....I have lost my touch with bulldawgs, can't seem to get a darn thing on them anymore

Hiya -

I rely on a fairly short list of baits come fall...

- Jigs like an Esox Cobra with a shad body

- single spin spinnerbaits (if I could have only one lure this would be it) - either Rad Dogs or M&Gs with the front blade cut off.

- Jerkbaits like Magic Makers, 8" Reef Hawgs, straight Burts and 10" Suicks

- Crankbaits like 10" Jakes, 10" Believers and Ernies - either cast or trolled

Very late in the fall, that list would include big plastics like Red October tubes and a blade bait like a Fuzzy Duzzit.

Cheers,

Hiya -

I cut off the front blade on M&Gs just to turn them into a single spin rather than a tandem. I like the bulk/profile of M&Gs in the fall, but prefer single spins. Easier to work deeper and just more versatile. 95% of the spinnerbaits I throw during the season are single spins.

The spinnerbaits I *really* like in the fall are the old M&G Lunkers and Lunker Tandems. Huge spinnerbaits that are great for slow rolling. Not made anymore, and I'm down to my last few... frown.gif

I have to side with RK on the single blade theory. They do work nice and deep plus I always thought the smaller blade sound took away from the steady pulse or thump of the big blade. I go as far to take my tandems apart and replace both blades with one BIG blade like a #8 or #10 blade in the fall, big slow thump thump thump.
