Winterizing my boat ??

I have an 1800 Fisherman and will be winterizing it for the first time in about a month and a half. I bought the boat in a private deal and no dealerships close so Im going to have to do it by myself.

I have a 150 Yamaha VMax 2 stroke and a 9.9 Yamaha 4 stroke.

What do I need to do to get it ready for a cold Canadian winter.

Main thing is to make sure you drain and fill the lower unit this fall instead of spring. If water is in there it is best to find out before it freezes. I like to disconnect fuel line and spray fogging oil in the carbs while the last of the gas is burning off but I dont know how critical this is for a 4 stroke. Also get some fuel stabilizer in the gas real soon.

This is just as important on 4 strokes. A cylinder is a cylinder and rings are rings. This will help keep moisture from creating surface rust. Also, make sure that the inside of the boat is DRY. We replace dozens of floors every year because boats were stored wet and over time the floor prematurely rotted out.

I have the same boat with a 150 4 stroke. The dealer said to put fuel conditioner in the tank the last time you take it out for the season. I have the in floor rod locker and I will leave it and all the storage compartments and battery compartment open to keep them dry. I will pull the plugs and spray fogging oil in the cylinders and then turn it over a few times. They also say to raise the front of the boat to get all the water out of the bilge and livewell piping.

What is the name of the fogging oil you spray in the cylinders?? Do you just remove the plugs and spray in the holes ??

There are several manufacturers of fogging oil. The last can I bought was made by Stabil, the company that makes the gas stabilizer. Yes, you pull the plugs and spray directly into the cylinder. The can will say how long to spray in each one. Put the plugs back in, detach the clip for the kill switch and turn it over a few turns.

Deep Creep is the perfect product for this. Its basically Sea Foams motor tune in an aerosal can. It contains a lubricant, a moisture dispersent, and a upper end cleaner. It has many uses around the house/garage. The Sea Foam Motor tune is also a good fuel stabalizer and a beniffit of using it is next spring when you fire the boat up you'll be cleaning the entire fuel system and upper intake!

While we are on the topic of winterizing it may not be a bad idea to repack the wheel bearings. I do it right before I put the boat away for the year. Next spring I'm ready to go!!

1.Change lower unit oil

2.Fog motor

5.pack wheel bearings

6.charge batteries and take them out

7.remove electronics

8.remove all foood such as candy bars etc...(mice love these)

9.Drain boat- then I pour windshield washer fluid in so any excess water doesn't freeze.

10. Remove all fishing equipment

11. Stabil in fuel

12.Remove plug if parked outside

13. Tarp it up and your set.
