i had a buddy the other day that didn't want to get up too early to go fishing. So here is what i told him. Just pretend it is January and you would do anything to go out. That made me think only 10-12 weeks until possible freeze up. Get out while you can!!!! It is not going to be long before we are all siting in this forum Talking about rods, lures, and other dump besides catching fish. So maybe i am the party [PoorWordUsage]er for bring up that there will be ice in 10-12 weeks but for the sake of sanity get out. ike

Hiya -

I hear ya. You want to get REALLY depressed about how short the season is, work on a fishing magazine. I was working on the fall issue before the season even opened. Right now I'm writing stuff about ice fishing... frown.gif

But, you can apply that logic to your benifit too. Why mow the lawn? It'll all be covered in snow before long anyhow... wink.gif

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Hiya -

Yep. I'm the editor at Esox Angler, which is a muskie, pike and walleye magazine, and I write a column for ODN. Theoretically the column is about muskies, but I tend to wander into other topics a lot smile.gif Do some freelance things for In-Fish too, which is neat. Also now the Managing Editor for Fishing The Wildside, one of FM's sponsors. Really excited about that because I'll get to write about other species more. Much as I love muskie fishing, I fish for everything, so be fun to work on some other types of articles. I've really been on a bass kick lately, which started when the water got too hot to fish muskies. Now the water's cooled down, and I can't seem to leave the smallies alone long enough to get back to muskie fishing smile.gif

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Hey ike,

Check out the latest In-Fisherman, RK has an article in there, good stuff!

RK - Did you just give the green light to go chase muskies again? grin.gif I was out last week and it was still 81 water temps, so we chased pike and bass instead. Went bassin' yesterday AM and ended the day with a fat 20 incher. I noticed my bass casting (dock working) skills almost seem improved after more muskie fishing than in years past. Similar to swinging the heavy bat in the on-deck circle so the bat feels lighter at the plate I imagine! It takes 27 3/16 oz jigs to equal the weight of a mag bulldawg......crazy!!

Man, muskie talk in the bass forum! How many times have I told you guys not to do that? grin.gif

RK, I'm glad to see you're considering drifting away from the Dark Side (muskie fishing) and joining our happy family here. It's kind of fun catching fish, isn't it?

Hiya -

cjac - I'm going to check water temps this weekend, but I sort of wonder if it's going to be cooled down enough yet. Takes a long time to climb down from 80+ degrees even with some cool nights.

Funny that you bring up things like dock skills... One thing I notice every time I switch gears away from muskies is just how horribly my mechanical skills for other types of fishing suffer when I'm fishing muskies a lot. It's all pretty much brute force (I'm fond of saying that the two main traits required for muskie fishing are a strong back and a weak mind...). I inevitably blow the first few fish when I switch from muskies to something with even a little finesse involved. Takes a while to knock the rust off. When the water got hot I fished bass for the first time in about a month, pitching jigworms, and I was glad I was by myself so my humiliation was private. (Note to self: when your line starts going sideways, set the hook...). Thank god for Power Bait so they'll hang on long enough for me to realize it's a fish. Also nice to see those skills do come back though.

Ray - Trying to tell muskie fishermen what to do is like teaching a pig to sing. It will just frustrate you, and annoy the pig. wink.gif

Kidding aside - most of my writing is about muskies, but I fish for everything, and there are times when I think smallies could make me give up muskie fishing.

One of my pet peeves with the muskie culture these days (and it seems to be getting worse) is that some muskie fishermen seem to measure how serious they are about muskies by how much they hate all other fish. I went hardcore, all muskies all the time for a while, but it eventually dawned on me how stupid it was to ignore everything else. I even remember the day when I finally said No Mas. Was muskie fishing, totally dying, and knew full well it just wasn't going to happen that day. Meanwhile I was seeing bass crusing everywhere, and thought "What a dope..." Now hate to think about how many good bass or walleye bites I missed out on during that time. The other aspect of that is fishing for walleyes and bass - particularly bass - has made me a much better muskie angler. Don't get me wrong - I'm still a muskie addict, but not to the total exclusion of other fish by any means...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

RK, well said about the pursuit of other species. I'm going up north for a week, spending it on a small bass/panfish lake up in the Pine River area. No muskie gear is coming with. It's called a VACATION!!! Muskie fishing is often tough, hard work! Bassin' is fun, and that Chronarch and the St Croix Tourney stick weigh less combined than the 8 foot rod alone does!

I should say that initially I did have a couple nests in my lap on the first couple casts. After the "brute force" mentality wore off, I was dropping the jig right where I wanted!

Vacation can't come soon enough!

OK. I'll fess up too. I have some muskie gear (man, I hope the wrong people don't read this). It hasn't moved in a couple years, but I'm sure at some point it will again.

Man, I don't feel at all better after admitting that.
