c&amagn
Does anybody know where a person can purchase some Pencil Lead. I saw a fishing show this past w-end where they were fishin on a river for trout/salmon and a guide was using Pencil Lead on a simular setup like a Lindy Rig? What it is, is a long piece of lead like a pencil, he would then cut the lead stick to the disired length/weight with his special pliars, use the same pliars to flatten one end, punch a hole in the flat end, clamp a swivel through the hole and run his fishing line through the swivel as so to say a free floating lead bottom weight. I would think this pencil lead would make a great walleye weight rig system as a person could cut the desired lead to match his speed of drift or rigging system for walleye fishing? I have looked a both Cabela's and Bass Pro but no Pencil lead? Thanks,
icehousebob
Pencil lead is a misnomer. A pencil actually contains graphite, which is not bendable and wouldn't make good sinkers. If you want long and thin lead strips, buy yourself a spool of 95-5 lead solder. Be sure to get the solid kind, not the acid core variety.
c&amagn
Thanks, On the show the object was shaped like a pencil about the same length and diameter of a pencil but was actually 100% lead throughout, the fishing guide called it Pencil Lead, that's why he used it due to he could cut it to the exact match lenght and weight he needed to match his fishing conditions and speed of the current. Ralph Wiggum
I've seen it but I can't think of where.
stellarfisher
You can get it Gander Mountain, most stores will have it in stock. If they dont have it they can order it and get it within a week. I know that the Blaine and Woodbury stores have it. It's pretty cheap too.

c&amagn
Thanks Stellarfisher, I'll give Gander Mtn a try, just looked like a great setup for rigging "eyes", like if you think you got too much weight on, just trim more off the end. Thanks,
redhooks
You can buy spools of lead that are solid or hollow, the hollow is nice cuz you just slide it on your 3way dropper leader and crimp down, solid you have to poke a hole into it. Making own lead weights to match current is a popular method for driftfishing salmon/steelhead in AK and Pacific NW and may work well for rigging eyes. Some guys also make slinkies by putting bb's into a piece of parchute cord and melt ends closed. If you need less weight cut open pour out a few bb's and melt closed w/ lighter. If you go w/ spools of lead buy a "leadmaster" pliers-that has needle nose for crimping, diagonal cutters for cutting to length and a pin to punch holes on lead-also good for unhooking fish. Had mine for 10 years and still gets used alot. Post if this new method works for you and you might start a new trend! Goodluck and tightlines!redhooks

jig n' jerk
Try places that sell lure and rod building supplies. Google mudhole and you will find a site that I believe carries the pencil lead and the pliers you asked about. I also believe it would make good walleye rigging material. I know it works great for drift fishing steelhead.
