MN Record Broken

Recommended Posts

Hey Trout....

Nice place you have up north!!! Took a look at your site, nice pics.

Question, was it three inches or ounces? Length can vary so much based on the girth, many have been caught that are longer than the current record, just lacked the belly.

well, i think he said 3 inches, but the guy i heard it from is a well known liar (not a fisherman, suprising)

Not sure that he'd pay attention to close to the story, but I was suprised to see this post after what he told me.

its not from Shamineau lake is it?

if so i was sent pics of that fish and it is no where near a record and according to the photo of it laying on the ground with the tape next to it. it is not even as big as they said - claimed it was 52 and close to a record but in the pic they start at 4 inches and end at 51 making it a 47, with no belly. the fisherman in question thought they had close to a record and called a bunch of news stations and fisherman they knew. i never herd of it making it to the air but maybe it did in brainerd. wonder if this is the same fish? i would post pics but they are way outside the fm guidelines and will make most musky fisherman puke.

wcco. The video news story just had pictures of the fish they displayed as they talked about the fish. From the sound of what you wrote before they are probably the same pictures you saw. I do not know the people who caught the fish.

Yep it is on WCCO's video section, third page.

What a joke, why this was newsworthy I have no idea...

I am pretty sure I have caught bigger muskies, and I have never caught one over 48.5" long...

I saw this on channel 5 news. It was a complete JOKE! The fish was caught on shamineau (sp?) They they said the fish was 52", just 3" away from the state record but in reality the fish was not even relatively close to the record as far as weight goes. A nice catch but I dont know how it made the news.

Also from the sounds and looks of it the fish wasnt treated very well. They interviewed one of the people in the boat when it was caught and he said something along the line of "I grabbed it and threw it into the boat". They also showed several pics of the fish one being held and the other laying in the grass. Im guessing it was out of the water for some time.

That resort on shamineau supports harvesting of Muskie. I have stayed at the resort and in the office they have tons of pictures of muskies laying on the grass in front of the resort. I wonder if those people were staying there...

I echo these same comments about the resort owners. They talk about muskies as if they eat all the walleyes and sunfish and tell clients to keep all they catch. Not very ethical. He even allowed someone to take pictures of a sub 40 musky that was caught OUT OF SEASON. The guy came in on a pontoon and wanted a picture taken of the fish. It was on a stringer. They released it, but that fish was turtle food for sure.

i hate to admitt this but i know these guys. not my buddies or anything but a friend of a friends brother. they did release the fish. i am sure it is dead anyway. it was out of the water a very long time and treated very poorly.

After I returned from that trip to Shamineau/Alex I called the DNR to ask if they would send a CO over to educate them. They said they would but I am not sure if it ever happened.

The could send someone over, but I sincerely doubt it would change anything. It might in fact make things worse. I have tried educating them as have others I know.

They are the type that whatever they catch goes in the bucket. Now the walleyes are harder to catch because the lake is getting so clear due to improving water quality and they blame the muskies. It is a tremendous walleye lake and there are some real huge fish in there, you just have to fish in low light conditions. We have caught some big walleyes out there while musky fishing over the years.

There was a large debate about muskies lowering the walleye population a while back in one of these forums. The general consesius is that they live well together and do not hurt each others population, its a myth. I am sure we all understand this....

But explaining that to people is another story

To make matters worse, I fished Alex this AM and got there just after someone had come into the little store/bait shop there with a 46" one (photo was going on the board when I arrived). He had apparently snagged it close to the surface and couldn't revive it. Why anyone would advertise/admit that they intentionally snagged a fish is beyond me. It's one thing to be dishonorable, but to be proud enough of it to tell people? Geez.
