Troublehook
Hey. I am used to fishing only in the shallow stuff, like up to 6 or 7 feet, and not much deeper usually, and honestly the deeper stuff scares the heck out of me. Not because I cant swim ,but because I cant see whats going on. I know there is some great fishing in the deeper water like 15 to 30 feet, so I think I am going to tackle this issue now. How do you know where to fish when all you have is a topographical (i think) map, and a simple fish/ depth finder(Bottom Line Fishing Buddy.) I dont like how I cant see any structure or anything like that. Also what should I use. I am targeting Mostly bass but also walleyes(I hav enever caught a walleye before though.) I am thinking about using a storm swimshad and crainkbaits, am I right? The most difficult thing for me is those suspended fish, because I have no clue how deep my lure is going. Also what is the best time of day/year I should target the deeper fish? I am assuming summer in the afternoon. I hope I covered all of my questions. Any other helpful tips are definatly welcome. thanks everyone. TH
cylinder
I'd skip the suspended fish till you get the rest figured out. Do you have a buddy who fishes deeper? You need to go out once or twice (at least) with someone who has done it to flatten out the learning curve.
cylinder
If you do want to go it alone, check out the depth finder manufacturers sites to see what to look for and what structure looks like. Also there are lots of sites that tell how to catch fish-- FM, walleyesinc.com, walleyehunter.com, (Contact Us Please), in-fisherman.com.... If you post where you're located or where you want to fish, I'm sure one of us would be glad to show you a thing or two.
Troublehook
Well one of the lakes I fish is orchard lake in lakeville, and here is a map of it. I circled in red where I think might be a good spot. Any other recomendations?

nofishfisherman
During the winter there are alot of houses set up near that area on Orchard. Not sure what they are pulling out of there, probably a mixture of stuff.Gernerally instead of saying I am going to fish deep today I will start by going up and down that break to see what depth the fish I want to catch are holding at once you figure that out you can eliminate the other depths. Orchard lake is a good bass and northern lake but if you want walleye other lakes might be a better bet for you.Try posting questions about orchard lake in the metro forum, several guys there frequent the lake and might give you some tips.
