jig n pig

if im fishing a lot of lakes and catching bass from the 12 to 15 inch range would u through a jig n pigs or not. Im thinking about trying it more because i was out a day ago and caught a 13 incher on a 10 inch worm and got to thinking if that bass ate a 10 inch worm it should be able to eat a pig n pig easily. The lakes have bigger fish but the ones i have been catching are in that range. I havent done much fishing with a jig n pig but i have caught a 19 and 20 incher with the lure. Just asking for your personal opinion if you would try it or not.

It's the first thing I pick up and if I had to choose one lure, that would be it. It is extremely versatile.. smile.gif The trailer is the most important part, so I would suggest having a variety of them to choose from. Good luck!

You will be suprised how small a fish will hit a jig... I do feel you will get bigger fish on a jig however.. During tournaments, Once I have a limmit, you will often see me throwing a jig!

As for trailers, sometimes I match. sometimes I dont.. depends on what kind of mood I am in.. the only time i really feel it makes a big difference is during a full moon during the crawfish molting. Then I throw white claws.

I have always been told it happens around the full moon in July/Aug... I wish a science teacher would help us out.

SLYSTER???? When does a craw molt?.. I have been told in the first year they molt about 5 times then only twice the second year and dont live much longer than 2 years?

I caught some in a minnow trap last summer and the following day they molted. I don't recall the moon stage. Maybe if someone catches a couple and then, keep an eye on them we could find out the answer? Unfortunately the small creek by my house is almost dried out so I don't think I'd have much luck catching a few.

Happy Tails anyway!

and what do you guys typically do with your jig and pigs? I just started fishing them this year and have caught a grand total of 3 fish. I have been swimming them. using a shimano TC4 7' rod with a abu garcia baitcaster and sort of pumping it while a reel to give a swimming feel.

each one has been caught with a big thump as the fish took it in. haven't caught anything trying to jump it across the bottom or jig it up and down?

Molt as in shed their skin? I don't know.. but isn't it dependent on growth rather than time of year? I have had many 'pet' crayfish in tanks and they molt at different times.. kind of like snakes (which I also have) they shed every 5 to 8 weeks.. more if they get fed a lot because they grow faster. I would guess they crayfish breed all at the same time but molt whenever they feel like it due to the tough exoskeleton becoming too small.. meaning every day some are molting in a given lake.

Very interesting, I guess I'm gonna have to read up a little bit more on the crawfish. Thanks all for the replies. I too would not think they molt all at the same time, but who knows nature is wierd that way thats what makes it so great.

Not a great picture, normally a 1/4 to 3/4 oz. jig with a skirt. (the jig) and a plastic or pork rind trailer.(the pig). Usually fished on heavy rods and heavy line. 50-60lb test. In really thick weeds and brush.

Hope this helps.

just in case you are wondering where the name jig and pig came from; before many of the great plastics were developed that we have now. most of us use a pork trailer with the jigs. hence the name jig and pig. grin.gif most of us now us plastics instead.

Here's a photo of a jig-n-pig bass that I caught last week. This trip was the first time that I've caught fish on a jig-n-pig. I got hooked when I got two fish in two casts grin.gif I caught the most fish hopping it on a weedline in 13 FOW. I also caught a few swimming it over the tops of weeds.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
