you need a ranger or a triton with a 250 hp motor in order to fish tournaments. Dont forget you need at least 15+ rods and one of those pro staff shirts that say ranger or triton on the back with your name stitched on the front.

I must have missed that part in the "Dummies Guide to Tournament Fishing" book. tongue.gif

hey Cat i am 21 and i have been fishing tournies since i was 15 like you are now. at first the "old" guys might look down at you but when start placing in the money nothing needs to be said. the most important thing to remember when fishing tournies is that any one can win on any day and not to be intimadated by those other guys in big shiny boats with "pro team" yeah right stickers. if i were you i would try and join a weekly fishing club style tourny circut just to get your feet wet for the rest of the summer and then move up to all day or all weekend tournies next summer. good luck but more importantly have fun. Tournaments are a great way to bump up your learning curve. get into a few local ones and test your skills. You will soon realize how addicting tourney fishing can be. The main thing is to always keep a positive attitude.

You can fish the tourneys and I believe you would learn alot in the process, however, a homebody lake and you just might teach the "pros" a thing or two. I say go for it! It can take some dough top get entry into the bigger tourneys and there you might need a sponser or two to foot the bill. Bottom line is make sure that in any given situation that you have the boat and the equipment to get you out to the fish, on them, and back again. No fish, is worth risking your life! Look around your hometown, there might be a few folks that would sponsor you. I like to think of the movie, "Tin Cup". It doesn't matter who sponsors you if you behave, but, it gives them a whole lot more exposure if you are the guy that beat the big boys or gave it a heck of a try and lost!

My buddy and I used to fish in small tourneys when we were in college. We use to fish out of one of those tiny 8ft plastic pontoon things. Basically a pontoon that we put a couple of lawn chairs on with a trolling motor. We actually made some money doing it up against some of the big rigs. I really think that when the guys blasted out of the starting gate and we were left putting along that because of our slow pace we worked the areas hard and pulled many nice fish out of a given spot. Give it a try. I can't tell you how satisfying it was to win over some of the guys with stickers, decals, big boats, etc. Fast and hard isn't always the means to an end. Slow and deliberate always pays off in the long run. Go for it and have fun. Who cares. It's just fishing.
