After starting to fish cats this year, seems I'am on a buying spree again.I was at Cabin Fever sporting goods today and picked up Berkley Glow stick.Tonight in the garage in the dark I turned the light in the rod on and boy does it light up nice. Now I just need to go fishing. smile.gif

Time to GET R DONE......... LOL.. Let me know how that rod works.. I have looked at them a few times but just have not gotten one yet. Might just have to make the move..

I fished on the sand bar till midnight tonight and it is pretty frustrating to keep squinting to see the tip of the rod.. thank goodness I had my FISH ALERTS. the people down the bank were wondering what the world was going on over by me with all the beeping.. Just catching fish I told them. LOL

Here's the ticket to seeing your rod TIP at night...

bobberlight5lr.jpg

This is all I use now although I prefer the color red better and not the green that is shown. It is a replacement bobber light for lighted bobbers. Just use some electrical tape and tape the bobber light to your rod near the tip. To turn it on, push the colored end in. To turn it off, pull it out. The red colored bobber lights show up really well at night and all the light is on the tip of your rod.

They are about $2.50-2.99 a piece so a little spendy but they usually last about 3-4 nights of cattin'. Not too bad when you consider the alternatives.

About the Glow Stick rods... I've been back and forth with my opinion on them for awhile now. The rods are good, I will say that. The concept behind the lighting is good too but the application of it sucks. Pretty harsh criticism but the rod tip doesn't light up and thats what I want to light up. I've seen about 5 different Glow Sticks in use now and they all light the rod up the same way and the tip doesn't get any of that light. The rods are much better when the light isn't on since the entire rod blank glows in the dark, which is really cool and effective as well. I would still put a bobber light on the rod tip however to see the tip action better.

Wiskers... The lights on glow sticks are great in very dark places. Turn the light on for a minute and it will glow for quite some time. When the light is on, its blinding(in a dark area).. too much light for dark places. If the area you fish has lights around(near city), the glow will not do enough... but its obvious to see the whole rod shake when the lights are on. If you are in a dark place, the rod will charge in 2 seconds flat with a spotlight and glow for a half hour.

The 8' & 9' glow sticks are great rods. The lights are imperfect, but functional. The 7' rods are a bit light for big cats.. but would work great trolling fr walleyes.

I can do one better. It's a little plastic accessory with bells on it. The thing also has a holder for those Nite Brites. You attach it to the tip simply by screwing it on. I believe they were originally made for tip ups. The bells can get annoying, but you can always cut them off.

Hanson thats a great idea about the bobber lights! wink.gif

The glowsticks rods work great if you use the light to just to recharge the blank. With the bright main light on and on a dark river its so bright it blinds you and you cant see the rod tip. It glows pefect without the main light on though.

Just a little photo of the glowsticks in action. tongue.gif

I tell ya what,I have used them little bells and I still have some in my box. But the down side of them bells is they drive me crazy LOL... I can handle only so much jingling....My fish alerts work great but in the dark, that extra light on the tip would keep you fron missing them light tugs. Might have to try to old bobber light trick with the Fish Alert.

Them Fish Alerts are the bomb. With any luck, I got the ball rolling with FM to get them on the sponsor board and FMers will have the option of ordering them on here.

I think they will sell pretty good once people see and use them.

Been a long time Joel. When you comming up again?

Hanson gets all kinds of great ideas.. bait coolers on wheels, bobber lights, the list goes on, but nothing else comes to mind(I am absent minded).

I will give him credit.. He is better about observing his surroundings and learning from his surroundings and experiences than most of us. Its better to learn from your surrounding than neglect what you see when you already think you know all that is needed to be known.

I'm not giving you a hard time hanson. I appreciate you sharing from your experiences to help teach others to make fishing just a little bit more efficient, enjoyable, and sometimes effective!

I've been using the bobber lights for a few years on my ice-fishing rods when using a rod balancer like the Rock n Reel. They work great, I think That Guy saw them in action a few years ago when we were giving Calhoun a go. I think they'd be the perfect thing for cattin'.

Hanson, I've found that if you have the light facing towards the bottom of the rod that you get a brighter display and can read what's going on from greater distance. But you probably already know this. grin.gif

I prefer the light on the line itself. Most of you have seen my wine cork trick. A small hole in the bottom allows a light stick to be inserted if need be. Its nice to know how much line has been taken out if you weren't paying attention when you got bit.

The only problem is getting the wine corksdrunkard.gif

Yep, for shore fishing, Dark's cork setup takes the cake. Nothing like watching that cork slip down the bank, almost as sweet as the audible clicker we all know so well.......almost wink.gif

Dark.. I modified your flying bobber idea a little bit and it works good. I use styrofoam ice fishing bobbers that have the black peg insert with a hole in it(peg or slip bobber type). If you take the peg out, the green sleeve that comes in the bobber becan glow sticks will fit perfectly in the hole.. find a snap swivel that fits snug in one end of the sleeve and put a drop of goop or silicone on it leaving the snap exposed, and stick the glow stick in the other end and its done.

The bobbers are already pre-slit for sticking the line into, I just lightly wedge my line between the float and the insert and it works great. 39 cents each for the bobbers at the local bait shop, $2 for pack of 4 glow sticks with inserts, $1 for the swivels... cheap way to make some up.

I seen corks at my local true value hardware one day.. didnt look at the price.

Wow you scored man I went back and looked and they are selling one for alittle over $6 + shipping not to mention it was only available in the UK. I also found a pack of 3 for about $22!

Shoot me an email and let me know where you scored yours, if ya dont mind. The bobber lights work great but spendy. I think these would be alittle more cost effective. [email protected]
