Slug barrel scope??

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone had insight on what style of scope works best for a rifled barrel on my SBE?

My buddy mentioned something about a quick clip mount that could be taken off during deer drives but had no idea what it was called. Any insight or suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks, Adam

Do you have a barrel with a scope mount system like a cantilever style mount or not? There are quick detach rings made for scopes now, I have a set from Talley Mfg. for my muzzleloader so the scope can be on during the gun season and off for the muzzleloader season. I've not seen a mounting system for a slug barrel that also has iron sight option underneath it though. They do make those scope holders that are a bracket that is held on by the pins in the reciever, but I question the accuracy of those, especially when taken on and off.

Lastly, if you do mount a scope on a shutgun, make sure it is a scope built to handle shotgun recoil, they are different than regular rifle scopes.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies fellas, to be more specific I need both the barrel and the scope. Hopefully i will be able to just order both at the sametime as a matching pair for my SBE. I missed the last two seasons so I am really looking forward to this one.

First let me say I hope your recovery at Walter Reed went well. For your service to our country, thank you !

If you are looking at buying a barrel that has a cantilever type scope mount, don't bother with the quick release type scope mounts, your barrel won't have any open sights. If you go with a barrel that has open sights you can get a scope mount from B-square that will mount with a couple of extension pins on your reciever that can be reasonbly quick to put on or take off. Just have a good place to keep the extra pins handy.

As for scopes if your want to leave a scope on for both drives and hunting from a stand a good quality scope with 1.5x5 or 2x7 magnification left with the magnification turned all the way down will serve you well. Another good alternative is one of the holo sights from Bushnell or ATN. They allow you to keep both eyes open and work well in close or out to well beyond slug range.

You could also get the cantilever barrel with a nice scope to use when stand hunting and then change barrels back to your existing smoothbore barrel using an open choke and the bead to aim in brushy areas or at moving deer. There are sights that mount to your vent rib if you need a rear sight and front blade.

If you are going to be shooting a scope on a shotgun I highly recomend also getting a cheek piece for the stock to raise your eye to the scope while allowing good cheek contact with the stock, makes sighting in a lot less painfull and easier to get a scope on target.

If you can, experiment with a couple of different setups from friends and family and pick the setup that works for you.

Hope you have a happy and safe hunt.

So it would work to get the Mossberg barrel-scope combo I found for stationary hunting and then switch back to my smoothe bore barrel for drives. Will this effect the accuracy of the scope, with the off and on?

You wouldn't want to switch barrels. Just take your scope off if that is easy enough. A lot of ammo for rifled barrels can not be shot through a smooth barrel and vice versa.

Unless you were going to switch ammo to. of cource a monster buck will happen by and you will grab out of the wrong pocket...

Sutty, that isn't real good advice. "Just take the scope off" will leave you without much for options as you need to sight it in if you take it off and put it back on again to be sure you aren't going to wound a deer or miss badly or whatever. Changing barrels between the smooth bore open sights and the scoped rifled barrel between drives would only take a minute and you can easily carry sabot slugs and foster style slugs for the two barrels. If you can't have two guns, the two barrel options he mentioned is a great alternative.

I think my advice was just fine. Making sure you don't fire the same type of ammo through both barrels is a no no and I did say unless you are going to switch ammo to.

Alot of great info to say the least. Still not certain which way i should go. I won't be able to track running deer quite as well with my prostetic arm and the scope but i want the quick set-up time of the shot that the scope allows me.

But i guess i will have to make due with what i still have and figure something out. I managed to figure out how to fish again: so i am sure slug season will have its own difficulties but hopefully things go smooth.

Thanks for the in-sight.

I finally decided on going with a SuperX2 with a Simmons 3X9 on the rifled barrel. I am very happy with the set-up.

I got a 8 pointer the last day of the wounded veteran hunt up at Camp Ripley.
