Today I tried to get my son out fishing. Well, we put the boat in at Nabagamon, backed away from the dock at the landing, and proceeded to troll for some "long fish" as he calls them. Well, we go about 500 yards down the shore and his rod gets hung up, I put the motor in reverse to back up, engine rev's, but no go. Try to go forward, nothing. What the ?????? Trim the motor all the way up after shutting it off....walla no prop! I'd like to appologize to anyone within earshot, as the expletetives were flying.

I have to believe someone tampered with the kotter key and prop nut. I had a very stout stainless nut and kotter key on it, so I am certain it didn't corrode and "fall" out. I had my boat stored at my buddies house for about 2 weeks. It was parked right next to a suburban he owns that had the windshield shot full of holes. Seems he has a neighbor with some serious issues, but he can't catch him red handed and the cops can't find any proof either.

Now I gotta fork over 320 bucks for a new prop... frown.gif

Oh yeah I would! But that just shows why you must always check that stuff every time you go out. Not just because of A-holes out there but stuff does wear out and one little cotter pin could ruin your day. That reminds me of a problem my dad had on his boat about 4 years ago. He has a 36 footer w/ twin bravo 3s (two lower units w/ 2 props each). He had just gotten it out of storage and was about to put it into the water when he decided to do one last walk around. Comes to the lower unit and noticed one of the prop nuts was loose. Turns out the washer that holds the nut on had somehow broken and fell off. Long story short that last walk around saved him about 2600 bucks! Each SS prop goes for about 1300 bucks! shocked.gif

It was a stainless prop. I marked the spot with gps, so maybe when the water warms up (it was 55) I will take mask, snorkle and fins and go look for it.

I will certainly be double checking my stuff whenevr its been outta my sight again for more than 5 minutes.

Yep, you're wrong... Except for a small class of stainless steel (that wouldnt be used for a prop) it is generally very strongly magnetic.

Wade, If you have a decent idea of the location, drag an underwater camera around for a bit, you might be surprised. Good Luck!

p.s. Just curious, how deep was it where you lost the prop?

efgh, you're probibly right. If it was a 316 grade stainless prop, It would not rust and be NON-magnetic. A 416 grade and several others, would be magnetic, but they would also rust. I would opt to believe that most Stainless props would be made of a 316/304 grade but don't know for sure.
