leach trapping

Recommended Posts

We used to use the old tin coffee cans. Use a screw driver to punch a bunch of holes in it, not too big. Make a hole on the side at the top and tie a string to it. Then tie the string to some type of float. We put a rock in the bottom for weight and then some type of bait. The guy I did this with trapped beaver and he saved some beaver meat and put a chunck in each can. Put the plastic cover on the can and sink it. We checked it after a couple of days. The leeches could get in, but because of the sharp edges, couldn't get back out.

the frabill minnow traps work well, or what i do is take a piece of pvc pipe, put a cap on one end and fashion a funnel out of screen from s screen window on the other end. I would put in cut up suckers and could get a pound or two a day out of the traps. but i was trapping leeches in beaver ponds, not in lakes or rivers. Chicken liver works well as bait, but if you are trapping in a small pond be careful because you could overbait and poison the pond.
