Battery Question

gunflint

Question

I have 2 starting batteries that were charged over the winter but seem dead now. These batteries are 4 years old. I have a new deep cycle battery that I would like to throw on and test the motor to see if it's the starter or just a coincidence that both batteries are dead. Any problems with this? Thanks

Gunflint:

I see really no problem in doing that. A deep cycle battery might not give you enough (CCA)cold cranking amps to do a proper test for the starter.

If it,s not to much trouble, pull your battery out of your truck and use it instead for a good test thou.

Just a another question, did you happen to have your batteries sitting on cement thru the winter?

Concrete will kill a battery in a very short time and never allow them a full recharge.

Try to store them on a old table or pallet if possible.

Gunflint,

I have used my deep cycle a number of times to start my motor when my starter battery went dead from to much use by the end of the day. No problem. Worked great.

I went to 2 starter batteries to avoid that problem, like you apparently did.

A 4 year old starter battery has probably reached it's end anyway.
