Hey guys,

Here are some pics from our successful weekend hunting morels. The first three pics shows all of the morels we found (We couldn't get them all to fit on the table.) The third pic shows them all laid out and ready for drying. By far our best day ever! Shroompics002.jpgShroompics003.jpgShroompics004.jpgShroompics009.jpg

Yes, they were all found in the Southeast part of the state. My hunch is that we could have one more good weekend. Especially considering how much cold and rainy weather we had...they should be growing again now with this warmer weather. We were still finding a lot of grays last weekend so I think they yellows should still be going.

I went out Tues. night to the spot I picked over fifty a couple days before and found about 10. Most were drying out and moldy. Holy balls were the mosquitos biting that night too.

Nate - Thanks for the info - You have given me hope that I will find some more this weekend. I will be in the Northfield area so that is kinda close to where you are talking. Also, Thanks to doser for the mosquito report! I don't think I would have remembered the repellant but I sure won't forget it now!! Good Luck Guys!

Do not give up, my bro and I picked 250 this morning and they were all huge yellows----only a few were just starting to dry out. Found one clump of 14 all connected that probably went 1.5 pounds----wish I would have brought the camara. did find a lot of greys and a couple "giants" with bases bigger than beer cans and 8 inches tall that were too dryed out to pick.

It has been a great year with over 1000 in the bag. smile.gif

Sounds like you had a stellar day.Isnt it great you you find a bunch like that.

Wiggle my worm

You can eat untill you puke. Then dry a bunch for the winter. You can also sell them for some pretty good money also to food co-ops and some stores.I never sell any as there are plenty of people and friends that like them.If they are not your friend, they will be when you give them some.

I bought 5#'s last week for $110 at the restaurant I run, they were southern Minnesota morels bought through a co-op. Also found about 10 monster sized shaggy manes growing outside an unused back door....unfortunately about 2 days too late. frown.gif

I eat'em and dehydrate for later use----they are too good to have too many. I also give them to friends and especially land owners who have given me permission to look for shrooms and hunting. Today found another 150 and found hoards of them that were too far gone too pick. I am now going to hang up the mushroom boots till next year and concentrate on fishing.

After spending over a dozen hours in the woods wandering aimlessly looking for the elusive morel, I came to the conclusion that this was a hopeless quest. My wife thought I was insane, always talking about mushrooms but never finding any. I even convinced myself that they probably didn't taste that good, so it's just fine I didn't find any. And then it happened. In my back yard of all places. Right in the middle of Eden Prairie. I was cleaning up some brush yesterday, and WHOA! What is that on the ground. It's a MOREL! I looked around a little more and found a second one nearby. They seemed a little dry to the touch, but not knowing any better, and since I really wanted to taste these guys, I dusted them with flour and fried them in butter. Wow were they good. It's too bad things are just about over for the year.

So my year of morel-hunting comes to a close, after I had already closed it. I had given up about a week ago.

For all the trees I sit up against while turkey hunting every spring, I'm out there about 3 weeks almost solid. Maybe it's because I'm turkey hunting, and not morel hunting, I don't know. I have yet to really stumble upon a load of 'em....until today.

Hunting today I find an elm in that perfect condition, with some absolute monster morels under them. Almost all of them were too far gone to pick, but I got a few of them that looked OK, and about 2 that looked great. Impossible to miss, towering over the rest of the leaf-litter, these things were beasts. Must've been over 50 or so on one elm. The biggest ones had already gone bad, but see pic for one of the "smaller" big-ones.

I would agree that the morels are nearing the end.I quit picking about a week ago as the underbrush.bugs and ticks were getting to bad.I ended up with a o.k. year.I didnt pick that much, but I had some real good meals and my friends enjoyed them also.Nice batch you picked.Enjoy. smile.gif

Well, I hate to bring bad news but once you find the mother load one time, it sticks with you like an obsession. You will think to yourself and tell others about the perfect elm you found in 2006 with giant yellows the size of footballs! It will be legend and you will always seek to out-do yourself in the future. You will be hooked for life now...see you in the woods next Spring, maybe I can tell you my story about the mother load in 2004! Good luck all!

My first Morel experience has me hooked!! I was golfing at a course near Red Wing this past Saturday and while looking for golfballs came across a few. Big yellow stemmed morels too! I have been hoping to get out and search for some but I guess stumbling across some golfing is a good way to start.

I picked a bakers dozen in about 10 minutes of searching before I had to get back to golfing. Fried them up with some butter and onions and loved them. Cant wait to look for more. Are they abundant in the summer at all?
