Buck Tails

Recommended Posts

I dont know if any of you guys make your own lures. I thought id give it a try and make some buck tails. I made my first one today but somethings wrong one cast the blade will spin clock wise and the next cast it will spin counter clock wise. Anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks for your help

Yep, one cast you must be in the northern hemisphere and the next in the southern - JK, good question. If I'm not mistaken they will spin clockwise as they are coming at you. Try making another one and see what happens. Good luck, its a great hobby.

They should all do that!!! In fact, as you retrieve, if you pause and let the lure drop or it hits rock or wood it will often start to spin the opposite direction. A bucktail that spins both ways actually reduces line twist because it's not always going the same way. Of course, some of my endeavors resemble flushing a toilet more than actual fishing and those may go backwards in the southern hemisphere... grin.gif

Blades will spin in either direction depending upon how they started moving when they hit the water. Some blades will spin only one direction due to an imbalance or defect in the blade.

As long as they are spinning and giving off good vibes I wouldn't worry about it.

Deitz,

Can you run down the hall and ask a physics teacher?? grin.gif

I'm not sure how the blade turning one direction vs another would look differently to a fish. In-line or safety pin style should perform the same way, blade turning in either direction. All topwaters, buzz and prop baits, must turn the same way every time due to the cupped blades, correct? I'll have to look tonight and see which way they all are. I'm guessing I'll see some that go counter and some that go clockwise.

This post has made me think too hard...... confused.gif

Here is a silly question however... I noticed the same thing with bass spinnerbaits one day a while ago..

Isn't it possible that you only catch fish when the blades are spinning in one direction?

Yes you can catch bass with the blade spinning either way, the do not have enough smarts to tell the difference. shocked.gifgrin.giflaugh.gif

...and you thought you could come into my house and get out unharmed. wink.gif
